Jeremiah Smith's triple crown chase continues on Saturday as he keeps on this scorching hot pace.
Barring injury, Ohio State's Jeremiah Smith will go down as the Buckeyes' triple-crown wide receiver. When his time is up in Columbus, he will very likely have the record for receiving yards, catches, and touchdowns.
Even more likely is that wherever he sets the record it will very likely never be touched.
Smith enters Saturday just 22 catches away from passing former teammate Emeka Egbuka with 206 career receptions and is just six touchdowns away from sneaking Chris Olave's 35 career touchdowns.
The kicker is that Smith is likely going to accomplish both of these in around 35 games. Olave set the touchdown record, needing 47 games to grab the record.
That isn't to say that what Olave did wasn't impressive; it is absolutely true that the pace Jeremiah Smith is on is unprecedented and will be impossible to replicate. Smith is averaging nearly 1 touchdown per game throughout his entire career.
His pace is laughable and his skillset is unlike anything that we have ever seen before.
With the pace that he is at, if we project out and assume perfect health throughout the remainder of the season and at least 14 games, Smith is on pace for 100 catches, 2,000 yards, and 15 touchdowns this year.
If those numbers come true, and that is leaving two potential games on the table, he would finish his career with a whopping 263 catches, 4,558 yards, and 42 career touchdowns. Not only would those blow all Ohio State records out of the water, but they would stand up very well against the all-time collegiate records.
He would finish number four overall in yards, tied for ninth in touchdowns, and surprisingly not even in the top 50 when it comes to all-time catches.
That fact alone just shows how great and how efficient Smith is at the receiver position. He isn't even on pace to have top-50 receptions, but he's in the top 10 in both yards and touchdowns.
He is a truly special talent, a one-of-a-kind player, and we have been so lucky to get to watch him play for the Ohio State Buckeyes.
If Smith stays on this pace, the Buckeyes are going to be a really tough team to beat. He needs to be special for Ohio State's offense to hit an elite level and maintain the rest of the team.
It will be a fun remainder of the season for Ohio State and if he stays healthy, it will be fun to watch Jeremiah Smith chase down all of these all-time records.
