Ohio State Buckeyes' star wide receiver duo of Jeremiah Smith and Carnell Tate were on fire on Saturday afternoon against the Penn State Nittany Lions. The dynamic duo has been so fun to watch all year long, but last week they were in rare form, even for their standards.
Both highly-touted receivers had nearly identical afternoons, as Smith finished Saturday with six catches for 123 yards and two touchdowns, while Tate notched five catches for 124 yards and one score. Combined, they had 11 catches for 247 yards and three touchdowns.
Despite producing multiple elite wide receivers, Saturday's performance by the two stars has not been done in almost 20 years.
2006 was the last time a duo of Ohio State receivers each had over 120 yards receiving, a 50-yard catch, and a touchdown with Ted Ginn Jr. and Santonio Holmes against Brady Quinn's Notre Dame Fighting Irish in the Fiesta Bowl.
Smith and Tate had everything on display on Saturday, and they were off to the races right from the start. On the very first offensive play of the game in the shadow of their own goalpost, quarterback Julian Sayin connected with a streaking Tate over the middle of the field. That opening drive was capped off by a 14-yard touchdown catch from Smith.
The red-hot pass catchers continued to show off their big-play ability throughout the rest of the contest. On two separate occasions, Tate won his matchup up the sideline and Sayin hit him in stride.
Smith, on the other hand, did a lot of his work over the middle, but did get loose in a man-to-man matchup to catch a 57-yard pass from Sayin.
The challenge that these present to opposing defenses is daunting. In addition to both players being taller than every defensive back on the field, Smith is bigger than every player on the field, while Tate is the fastest player between the white lines.

The most important element to the duo's game: they are better than everyone is that they catch the football. When the ball is in their area, they make sure that they come down with it, no questions asked.
The duo is so much fun to watch, and they are playing at such a high level. Coming into the season, everyone knew Smith capabilities, but few knew what Tate would to bring to the table.
There is no longer a question mark there. Tate has arrived and is showing that he is just as good as Smith, and the Buckeyes' offense looks completely unstoppable thanks to these two.
