Jeremiah Smith was shockingly not graded as the top wide receiver in college football this past weekend.
Jeremiah Smith is so good that it is laughable at this point. He is absolutely unguardable, and he proved it again on Saturday against the Iowa Hawkeyes.
Smith finished the day with 11 catches for 206 yards and two touchdowns on a day that he just absolutely torched the Hawkeyes' defense. There were plays where he was double-teamed, triple-teamed, triple-teamed, and, in the rare case, got man-to-man coverage, which he converted into massive gains.
Somehow, someway, Smith was not graded out by Pro Football Focus as the top receiver in the country. He had the second-highest grade with an 89.6. Missouri's Cayden Lee graded out as the top receiver in the country with a 91.1 grade after his eight-catch, 110-yard day against Florida.
An objectively great day against the Gators, but come on, what is that? If there were ever another reason to not take PFF grades as gospel, this would be one.
Now, I totally understand that this is a biased complaint that truly doesn't mean anything at all. However, it is funny to just consider the level that Smith is playing at and compare it to some of the other wideouts in the country.
In his last two contests, Smith has 23 catches for 423 yards and six touchdowns. It's hard to comprehend how ridiculous that statline is and how Buckeye Nation got to simply take it all in.
He is single-handedly making the Buckeyes team unbeatable, and he is hitting his stride at the perfect time.
The Buckeyes are at the start of their hardest stretch of football, where they are going to need Smith to be at his best. It is a six-week stretch that started with their trip to Iowa and then features a trip to Indiana, followed by a home matchup against Oregon, to finish up with a trip out west to USC. That stretch actually finishes up with a now intriguing game against Northwestern, which won't be a cakewalk.
For the Buckeyes to get through this stretch undefeated or even with one loss, they are going to need Smith to continue being unguardable. If he continues at the pace that he is at, then look out: the Buckeyes may not lose the rest of the way.
Smith is clearly the engine of this football team. Without him, who knows where they would be, but that isn't a concern. Smith is on a mission to be the best to ever do it, and he just may.
If he does, maybe he'll become the top-graded wide receiver.
