Buckeyes head coach Ryan Day spoke on Legend Bey's use, and there is more to the story than what is being told.
Ohio State's star recruit Legend Bey has had quite an interesting beginning to his freshman year. The end of his recruitment was an incredible saga in which he went against his family's wishes and committed to Ohio State the moment he turned 18.
It was a fascinating story, but it landed him exactly where he wanted it to be in Columbus, Ohio. At that point, everyone believed that the drama around Bey was put to bed, but it hasn't been that smooth.
When the Buckeyes took the field for the first time against the Ball State Cardinals, Bey stood right next to head coach Ryan Day as they took the field. He sprinted out and then, wwas the very first Buckeye to touch the ball on offense.
The opening kickoff was directed right to him, and within the first five seconds of the season, he made a critical freshman mistake. He went against the direction of Brandon Inniss, who told him to take a knee, but he brought it out. As a result, he was tackled inside the 20, pinning the Buckeyes back.
Chalk that up to a freshman mistake, that is totally fair.
Well, when Ball State kicked off again and the same thing happened, chalk that up to selfishness.
Then, we all got a taste of what Bey could be. He got a swing route out to the left side and quite literally made six defenders miss en route to a touchdown. That run sent people into a frenzy.
People started comparing him to Percy Harvin and Reggie Bush.
Then, when the Buckeyes went down to Texas, Bey was nowhere to be found. He had just one touch for zero yards.
That performance was followed by a blowout against Kent State, where he again got just one touch and forwent zero yards.
Finally, the saga culminated against Illinois last weekend, when he didn't see the field in a blowout. There were rumors of an injury floating around, which may or may not be true. Social media posts went out calling for him to "be freed," along with a bunch of other weird, non-Buckeye actions.
On Tuesday, Ryan Day was asked about his expectations for Bey heading into a massive game against Iowa. He said that he would like to see him on the field, but he has to continue building up the trust that he has only done anything to hurt in his first couple of months as a Buckeye.
There is more to the story than what is being told to the public. There is something absolutely bigger going on that Bey and the Buckeyes have to figure out. He is oozing with potential but is in danger of never getting to show it.
