STILLWATER, Okla. — The Oklahoma State Cowboys bounced back impressively on Saturday afternoon, defeating the Gardner-Webb Runnin’ Bulldogs 4-2 at O’Brate Stadium to even their weekend series at one game apiece.
After a disappointing loss on Friday, OSU showed a marked improvement in defensive play and pitching, limiting Gardner-Webb to just two runs and playing error-free baseball.
The victory improves the Cowboys’ record to 10-4, while dropping the Bulldogs to 10-5. The two teams will decide the series winner in Sunday’s rubber match, set for 1:00 PM, with both squads vying for momentum early in the 2026 season.
Saturday’s game stood in stark contrast to Friday’s opener, where Oklahoma State suffered a lopsided 19-5 defeat in seven innings. In that contest, the Cowboys committed one error but struggled overall defensively and on the mound, allowing Gardner-Webb to explode for 19 runs on 19 hits. The Bulldogs capitalized on OSU’s miscues and pitching woes, building big innings throughout.
On Saturday, however, the Cowboys tightened up significantly, posting zero errors and stifling GWU’s offense with dominant pitching and sharp fielding. This defensive turnaround was needed to secure the win and restored confidence after the previous day’s rout.
The Cowboys struck early and maintained control throughout the game. In the bottom of the first, Brock Thompson and Kollin Ritchie singled to set the table, and Campbell Smithwick delivered an RBI single to plate Thompson for a 1-0 lead.
OSU extended that advantage in the second inning when freshman TP Wentworth crushed the first home run of his career, a line drive shot down the right field line, to make it 2-0.
Wentworth, who finished 2-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI, was a standout performer, showing his power and speed.
Gardner-Webb threatened in the fifth, stringing together four singles to score two runs and narrow the gap to 3-2.
Allan Camarillo and Matt Ilgenfritz each drove in a run for the Bulldogs, accounting for their only offense.
GWU starter Matt Stuart took the loss (1-1), pitching four innings and allowing three runs (two earned) on five hits with two strikeouts. The Bulldogs committed two errors, which proved costly, including a throwing miscue that allowed Wentworth to score in the fourth after a wild pitch and a balk advanced him.
Oklahoma State added an insurance run in the seventh. Alex Conover singled, stole second, and advanced to third on a Thompson groundout. After Ritchie walked, Aidan Meola ripped an RBI single to left field, scoring Conover for the final 4-2 margin. Conover was dynamic on the bases, swiping two bags and crossing the plate once.
On the mound, OSU southpaw Ethan Lund delivered a masterful performance in his fourth start of the season. The left-hander tossed six innings, striking out a career-high 12 batters while surrendering just two runs on five hits and two walks. Lund improved to 3-0 with a sparkling 1.74 ERA and now boasts 40 strikeouts on the year.
Reliever Stormy Rhodes bridged the gap with two shutout innings, and closer Noah Wech notched his fourth save by navigating a leadoff double in the ninth and retiring the next three hitters.
For Gardner-Webb, Kelvin Agosto doubled, and the team managed six hits overall, but they couldn’t solve Lund’s dominance or capitalize on opportunities.
The Bulldogs’ base running was mixed, with one stolen base but two caught stealing, including a key throw out by OSU catcher Brady Francisco in the fourth.
Other notable stats from Saturday: OSU collected eight hits, with doubles from Terrance Bowen and stolen bases from Conover. The Cowboys were hit by a pitch once (Colin Brueggemann) and left fewer runners on base than their opponent.
Looking ahead, Sunday’s finale promises a good one as both teams battle for the series victory.
The starting pitchers have not yet been officially announced, but Oklahoma State will likely turn to a fresh arm from their rotation to close out the weekend strong, while Gardner-Webb aims to rebound with one of their reliable starters.
Sunday’s finale should be another competitive matchup at O’Brate Stadium, where the Cowboys hope to build on Saturday’s defensive masterclass and carry positive momentum forward.
