A Monday practice injury forces the Sooners to pivot to their third-string center, testing the offensive line's depth and chemistry just days before the season opener
Oklahoma’s offensive line situation just got more complicated. Ryan Fodje was injured in Monday’s practice and will not play Friday night against UTEP, forcing another adjustment at center only days before the season opener.
Fodje had been learning a new position to help fill the gap created when starting center Jake Maikkula went down with an MCL injury during fall camp. Venables had been complimentary of the way Fodje handled that transition, calling him consistent, bright, and “undisturbed” while taking on a difficult job. Losing him this late in the week is a real shake-up for a unit that was already dealing with questions about continuity and physicality.
Western Kentucky transfer Caleb Nitta is the likely next man up and is expected to start in Fodje’s place. Nitta arrived with starting experience and a solid track record in pass protection. At Western Kentucky last season he played in 11 games, started the final nine regular-season contests at center, and allowed only two sacks on nearly 400 pass-blocking snaps. That background helps, especially in a short-week situation where the staff needs someone who already understands the mental side of the position.
Still, this is not an ideal way to head into the opener.
Center is one of the more important communication spots on the field. Protections, line calls, and the overall rhythm of the run game often run through that position. Oklahoma was already working through Maikkula’s absence. Fodje had given the staff some stability there in camp. Now the Sooners are turning to a third option before the first snap of the season.
The broader offensive line picture remains the biggest concern on the roster. Michael Fasusi and Eddy Pierre-Louis give the left side talent and toughness. E’Marion Harris anchors the right tackle spot.
The interior, though, has been unsettled.
Maikkula’s injury started the scramble. Fodje’s injury extends it. Nitta has the experience to function, but chemistry up front is usually built through weeks of practice, not emergency replacements in game week.
For John Mateer, the protection picture matters immediately.
Oklahoma needs the line to be functional enough to keep him clean and give the run game a chance to get going. UTEP should not present the same kind of defensive front Michigan will a week later, which may give the staff a little breathing room while it sorts through the next man up. That does not make the injury any less disruptive. It just means the first test is more manageable than the second one.
Venables has talked all camp about consistency and earning roles the hard way. The offensive line is now being asked to show that under less-than-ideal circumstances. Nitta stepping in is the practical move. How well the group communicates and holds up without two of its projected interior pieces will say a lot about the early identity of the offense.
Friday night against UTEP was already going to be about establishing a baseline. With Fodje unavailable and Maikkula still working back, the baseline now includes another layer of uncertainty at the most important position on the line.
Oklahoma has depth pieces for a reason. This week it has to use them.
