Fueling his drive with the sting of a blown lead, the Sooners' quarterback dismisses last season's playoff banner as "cute" while eyeing a national title run
John Mateer made it clear he’s not content with how last season ended.
When asked by On3 about the CFP banner hanging up in the facilities, Mateer said: “It’s cute. You know, it’s up there. But everybody’s like, ‘No, that’s not the goal.’ So, there are a couple of things like that, which from an outside piece, it’s like, ‘Oh, that’s great. You made the playoffs.’ But it’s like, no, it’s not.
“It’s a very uncomfortable feeling; I think it’s the best way to put it. Super uncomfortable. But we’re ready to go. We’ve been pushing it hard in the offseason, and if anybody’s feeling too good, it gets brought back up again, which is how it should be. You feel real pain in that, and I believe that. You get to sulk in it, and you move on, but those emotions are still there.”
Mateer has the right idea. It should be extra motivation when you look at that banner to remind yourself that you blew a 17-0 lead at home to a team that you had beat on the road previously in Alabama, and your season ended immediately.
Last year was a success sure, but you can't be satisfied with that. Mateer came to Oklahoma to win championships, not just to get to the playoff.
Although OU has never won a playoff game, the standard of the program isn't just to compete but to win championships. This past season was a good building block, but they should expect more out of themselves and take another step up from there.
The good news is for Mateer is he is healthy and has seen what it takes now to get the job done. He's capable of playing at a high level and with this being the most talented team Brent Venables has ever had, with the weapons around Mateer, he should have the confidence in himself and his team to go out there with a chip on his shoulder and compete for a national title.
Mateer’s comments show the right mentality. He’s not resting on last year’s accomplishments. He’s using that pain as fuel for this year. That kind of drive is what you want from your quarterback. He’s been through the highs and lows of last season, and he’s ready to take the next step.
Oklahoma has the pieces to be really good again in 2026. The defense should be elite. The skill positions are strong. If the offensive line improves, this team can make another playoff run and push for the SEC title. Mateer being healthy and playing with that edge could be the difference.
Mateer’s mindset is exactly what the program needs. He’s not satisfied with just making the playoff. He wants more. That kind of leadership is what wins in the SEC and in the playoff.
This feels like a pivotal year for Mateer and the program. The expectations are high, but the talent is there. If he can deliver that fearless, confident play and the team executes, this could be a special year in Norman.
If he plays with that same fire and the supporting cast does its part, the Sooners can make another run and hopefully take the next step.
