Following a whirlwind decommitment from Notre Dame, the elite New Jersey signal-caller brings his 29-touchdown efficiency to Norman, anchoring the future of Brent Venables’ offensive backfield
Oklahoma has landed its first commitment in the 2028 recruiting cycle. Trey Tagliaferri, the standout quarterback from Bergen Catholic in Oradell, New Jersey, has pledged to the Sooners.
The 6’1, 190-pound signal-caller announced his decision and made it official, capping off a wild few days.
Tagliaferri had been committed to Notre Dame for just six days before decommitting two days ago. Now he’s all-in on Oklahoma. “All glory to God, Boomer Sooner,” he posted, putting an exclamation point on the flip.
This is a huge early get for OU’s 2028 group. Tagliaferri checks in as the No. 13 quarterback and the No. 215 overall player nationally in the On3 rankings. He’s a legit prospect with major upside and a ton of buzz around his game.
First reported by Hayes Fawcett of On3, the commitment immediately sent ripples through recruiting circles.
Tagliaferri is coming off a strong 2025 season where he threw for 2,215 passing yards, 29 touchdowns, and just 3 interceptions. That efficiency stands out—low turnover rate, high touchdown production.
He’s got the arm talent, the quick release, and the football IQ that coaches love at the next level.
At Bergen Catholic, he’s developed into one of the top quarterbacks on the East Coast, facing tough competition week in and week out in a loaded New Jersey and regional schedule.
The recruitment process was intense. Tagliaferri held at least 34 Division I offers, with blue-blood programs all over the map showing serious interest. Oklahoma, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Penn State, and Ole Miss were among the heavy hitters in the mix. That’s an impressive list for a class of 2028 guy.
He took visits, weighed his options, and ultimately saw something special in what Brent Venables and the Sooners are building.
Oklahoma has been pushing hard on the trail lately, and landing a quarterback of Tagliaferri’s caliber this early shows the momentum. Getting the first commit in a cycle always feels good, it sets the tone and can help attract other top prospects who see the vision.
For a program like OU, which has a rich history of developing quarterbacks and competing at the highest level, adding a talented young passer with big-time offers already under his belt is a statement.
What stands out about Tagliaferri beyond the stats is his poise. He doesn’t just sling it around, he makes smart decisions with the football. That 29-to-3 TD-to-INT ratio from his recent season tells you he’s got command of the offense and plays within the system while still making big plays.
At 6’1 and 190 pounds, he’s got a solid frame that should continue to add good weight as he matures physically. He’s got the tools to grow into a legitimate dual-threat or pro-style presence depending on how the offense evolves.
Flipping from Notre Dame after such a short window shows how fluid this process can be, especially with younger classes. Now Venables' staff will have to do what they can to keep him committed.
Programs are evaluating earlier than ever, and kids are making moves based on fit, coaching staff, development plans, and NIL opportunities. Tagliaferri clearly felt Oklahoma was the right spot for his future.
This is an early building block for the 2028 class, and having a highly-ranked quarterback committed gives the staff flexibility to chase other elite talents on both sides of the ball.
The Northeast pipeline has produced some great players for Oklahoma over the years, and Tagliaferri looks like he could be the next one to make an impact.
