Brent Venables bets on upside by securing a local sleeper prospect, bolstering a top-ranked 2027 recruiting class that continues to surge

The Oklahoma Sooners picked up another quarterback in the 2027 class as unrated prospect Noah Smith announced his commitment to Brent Venables and the program.

Smith dropped the news himself on social media after a strong conversation with Coach Venables.

In his post, he wrote: “After a fantastic conversation with Coach Venables, blessed to receive and accept an offer from the University of Oklahoma. Thank you to my family, coaches, teammates, and everyone who has supported me through this journey. Let the work begin!!!! #BoomerSooner #Committed #QB2027”

This is a classic “OU sees something” commitment.

Noah Smith doesn’t have a current 247Sports rating and Oklahoma is his only Power Four (and only D1) offer so far. That tells you the Oklahoma coaching staff, particularly Venables, Ben Arbuckle, and the QB coaches, are seeing traits and upside that other programs haven’t jumped on yet.

When your staff bets on a kid early like this, it usually means they love the measurables, the arm talent, the football IQ, or the way he moves.

Time will tell, but these kinds of commitments have a way of working out when the OU staff is this high on a player.

This addition comes at an interesting time for the quarterback room in the 2027 class. Jamison Roberts remains the clear headliner as the four-star dual-threat leader, but adding Smith gives Oklahoma two QBs in the class and more developmental depth moving forward.

On a tougher note, the Sooners did lose a commit this week when three-star wide receiver Tra’Von Hall flipped to Ole Miss.

That one stings a little since Hall had been in the class for a while, and the fact that he went to a fellow SEC member school.

Even with the Tra’Von Hall flip, Oklahoma’s 2027 class is still sitting strong with 22 commitments and now holds the No. 2 spot in the 247Sports Composite, behind Texas A&M.

The class still features three five-stars (Hackett, Witten, Penny), a bunch of four-stars, and good balance across the board.

Landing a second quarterback this early shows the staff isn’t just filling spots, they’re being intentional about building the roster the way they want it.

For Noah Smith, this is a huge opportunity.

He gets to come into a program that believes in him enough to offer when nobody else has, under a head coach who’s building something real in Norman.

This class keeps rolling, and is on pace to be one of the best that the program has ever seen.
