The overlooked Lawton standout describes his "earn it" mentality after parlaying a single camp performance into a Division I offer and a spot in the Sooners' elite class

The Oklahoma Sooners added another quarterback to the 2027 class this week with the commitment of Noah Smith out of Lawton, and this one hits a little different.

Smith wasn’t highly rated. He didn’t have a star rating by any of the major recruiting sites and Oklahoma was his only Division I offer.

But after showing up to camp and balling out in front of the OU coaching staff, he earned his spot. That’s exactly how he wanted it.

In a new interview, Smith opened up about the mindset he took into the camp: “My mindset going into camp was simple: Go earn it. I have always carried a chip on my shoulder about these large schools not really paying attention and that day was another chance to prove who I am. I know nothing was going to be handed to me. I had to show up, compete, lead, and let the staff see who I am.”

He continued: “I felt like I performed well. I stayed confident, made strong throws, and competed the way I know how. More than anything, I wanted them to see that I belong at that level. I wanted to walk away knowing I gave them my best, and for me to get to ‘Yes’.”

That’s the kind of mentality you love to see. No entitlement, just a kid with something to prove who went out there and forced the staff’s hand.

Brent Venables, Ben Arbuckle, and the rest of the offensive staff clearly saw enough in him with his arm talent, competitiveness, leadership, whatever it was, to pull the trigger when nobody else had.

This adds some real depth to the quarterback room for 2027. You’ve still got four-star dual-threat Jamison Roberts as the headliner, but now Noah Smith gives you two quarterbacks to develop.

That’s smart roster building. Recruiting starts by winning at home, and the Sooners very well may have gotten their hands on a talented player like Smith before anyone else even noticed him and his capabilities.

You never know which kid is going to turn into something special once they get on campus, get stronger, and work with the OU coaches day after day.

As it stands, the 2027 class is still sitting at 22 commitments and is No. 3 class in the country on the 247Sports Composite.

This class is still very much on track to be one of the best, if not the best, high school recruiting hauls in Oklahoma history.

For Noah Smith, this is just the beginning. He’s walking into Norman with a chip on his shoulder and something to prove.

He already said it himself — “Let the work begin.”
