Porter Moser’s squad faces elite island talent to sharpen chemistry and test preseason All-SEC stars Xzayvier Brown and Derrion Reid before a pivotal new campaign begins for the Sooners
The Oklahoma men’s basketball team is taking a trip down to San Juan, Puerto Rico for some early preseason work.
They’ll play two exhibition games against separate Puerto Rican all-star teams put together by former NBA player Carlos Arroyo.
The games are set for Monday, August 3 and Wednesday, August 5 at Roberto Clemente Coliseum.
Porter Moser sounded pumped about the opportunity."We're excited about the opportunity to take our team to Puerto Rico," said head coach Porter Moser, who is starting his sixth season at OU.
"This trip will allow our players to compete against quality opponents, build chemistry and experience the culture of San Juan together. The additional practices and games will be valuable as we continue preparing for the upcoming season."
Getting some games against real competition before the season starts, plus bonding as a group in a different environment, should help this team come together faster. They’ll also host a youth basketball clinic while they’re down there, which is a nice way to give back.
This is Moser’s sixth year leading the Sooners. The team returns four letterwinners from last season, including two guys who should be big pieces again this year — Xzayvier Brown (15.6 points, 3.2 rebounds, 3.3 assists per game) and Derrion Reid (11.7 points, 4.4 rebounds). Both are preseason All-SEC candidates. Adding depth and experience around them will be key.
The trip was put together by Complete Sports Management, a company that handles sports events and marketing all over the world. It’s a good chance for the program to get some early work in while also building some international exposure.
It’s worth noting that Oklahoma State just did something similar. The Cowboys played two exhibition games in Puerto Rico recently, beating Selección BSN / Puerto Rico Fuerza 94-88 and then taking care of Puerto Rico Fuerza 120–92. So both in-state schools are getting some early competition down there this summer.
For Oklahoma, this should be a valuable trip. Exhibition games give coaches a chance to experiment with lineups, work on schemes, and see how the new guys fit in without the pressure of it counting toward the record. Playing against quality competition from Puerto Rico will be a step up from typical scrimmages back home.
Moser has talked a lot about building chemistry and culture. A trip like this, where the team travels, practices, plays games, and does community stuff together, is exactly the kind of experience that can help with that. Plus, getting out of Norman for a few days in early August should be a nice change of scenery before fall camp ramps up.
The 2026-27 season is shaping up to be an interesting one. With returning production from Brown and Reid, plus some newcomers, the Sooners will look to take another step forward in Moser’s system.
These exhibition games in Puerto Rico are the first real chance to see the group together in game action. It’s always cool when college teams get opportunities like this. Not only does it help on the court, but it gives players memories and experiences they’ll carry with them.
San Juan should be a fun spot for the team, and Roberto Clemente Coliseum is a historic venue to play in.
Overall, this is a smart move by the program. Get some early competition, build team chemistry, do some community work, and start preparing for what should be a challenging but exciting season.
