Fresh off a dominant breakout season in Norman, the Oklahoma Sooners' explosive deep threat looks to leverage elite speed and unmatched chemistry with John Mateer to dominate the conference

Isaiah Sategna had a really good first season in Norman, and it looks like he’s ready to take that next step in 2026.

In his first year with the Sooners, Sategna developed into a big-play receiver. He finished with 965 yards and eight touchdowns, falling just 35 yards shy of becoming Oklahoma's first 1,000-yard receiver since Marvin Mims in 2022.

He really hit his stride in the second half of the year...

- vs Ole Miss: 6 catches, 131 yards, 21.8 average, 1 TD

- vs Missouri: 3 catches, 109 yards, 36.3 average, 1 TD

- vs LSU: 9 catches, 121 yards, 13.4 average, 1 TD

Sategna finished the year third in receiving yards in the SEC, behind Mississippi State Bulldogs' Brenen Thompson and Tennessee Volunteers' Chris Brazzell.

Athlon Sports' Steve Lassan believes Sategna will build on that momentum and lead the SEC in receiving yards this season, even while praising Texas Longhorns' Cam Coleman.

"I went with Sategna at Oklahoma," Lassan said on That SEC Podcast. "... I think Cam Coleman might lead the SEC in touchdown catches. I think the yardage might be spread around. Sategna and Mateer built a nice connection last year. They did bring in Trell Harris and Parker Livingstone, but I think there's a good chance that Sategna just builds on what he did last year, and a lot of these receivers are kind of clustered at the top of the conference for number one in receiving yards."

There shouldn't be any concern about Sategna having a big year. If he is going to lead the SEC in receiving, it is going to have to come down to how well John Mateer plays and how often he can get him the ball.

Sure, the receivers around Sategna are better than before with newcomers at wideout like Parker Livingstone and Trell Harris, as well as tight ends Hayden Hansen and Rocky Beers, but I doubt that takes things away from him and actually opens up the offense, taking less attention on him and allowing him to get more targets are be an even big play threat.

Sategna and Mateer are comfortable with each other and he'll be Mateer's go-to guy. If Mateer is playing well, expect a big year from Sategna where he could not only lead the SEC in receiving, but also be the best wideout in the SEC.

Sategna has that big-play ability and speed that defenses have to respect. When he gets going, he can take the top off a defense and make big plays down the field.

Last year he showed he can be a deep threat and a reliable target in the middle of the field. With another year in the system and more chemistry with Mateer, he should be even better.

The additions at wide receiver and tight end should actually help Sategna. More weapons mean defenses can’t just key on him every play. If the offense is balanced and moving the ball, Sategna should see plenty of opportunities to make plays.

Mateer being healthy is the biggest key. If he can stay upright and play at a high level, Sategna will benefit. They built a nice connection last year, and with both of them entering their second season together, that chemistry should only get stronger.

I think Sategna has a real chance to lead the SEC in receiving yards. He’s got the talent, the system, and the quarterback. If everything comes together, he could have a special year and put himself in the conversation for All-SEC honors and maybe even bigger things.

This feels like a big year for Sategna. The Sooners have the pieces around him to make the offense dangerous. If he can build on what he did last year, he could be the best receiver in the conference.

Sategna's got the tools and the opportunity. Now it’s time for him to go out and prove it.
