Justin Herbert has had a weird start to his NFL career since he left Oregon.
Almost yearly, the Oregon Ducks have a star quarterback head to the NFL with a ton of hype and praise.
Oregon has developed a ton of very talented players over the years, and the league has continued to draft its guys. One of the better players to come from the Ducks recently is veteran Justin Herbert, who led Oregon to many wins while with the team.
Herbert was selected no. 6 overall by the Los Angeles Chargers in the 2020 NFL Draft, and he has been the leader of the team since. With Herbert under center, the Chargers have done well, at least during the regular season.
The former Ducks star has led the Chargers to the playoffs three times, but he has failed to record a win. But Los Angeles has rallied around its leader, and many people thought that this current season could be the year for the Chargers to put it all together.
However, 2026 has been a nightmare season for Herbert and the Chargers, with the team sitting at 0-6 heading into the current week. Herbert hasn't looked good at all, with the veteran quarterback missing throws and making mistakes that he hasn't typically made.
Coming into Week 8 of the season, Herbert has been ranked second to last in a new quarterback list by analyst Nick Shook of NFL.com. Herbert has been one of the worst quarterbacks in the NFL, making his placement on the list the correct landing spot.
Overall, Herbert has thrown for 1,141 yards with five touchdowns and eight interceptions on the year. This won't get the job done for the Chargers, and it's certainly not up to the standards that Herbert has set for himself.
The former Oregon star has struggled this year with a new offensive coordinator, but that still doesn't fully explain the issues he has seen. Herbert has looked like he is regressing as a player, which could be trouble for the Chargers since the signal-caller is still only 28 years old.
While there is still a lot of the season left, it will be very tough for the Chargers to turn things around to get into the playoffs. But Herbert may be able to salvage the year a little if he can put together some consecutive wins going forward.
The former Oregon star has struggled this year, but this one bad season doesn't have to define his career. Herbert still has a lot of football left in him, and he will now be defined by how he responds to this year.
