Dan Lanning’s recruiting surge intensifies as electric two-way star Tae Walden includes the Ducks in his final five. Oregon awaits a franchise-altering decision on July 1st.

The Oregon Ducks and head coach Dan Lanning’s recent success in the 2027 recruiting cycle could reach new heights during the month of July.

This offseason, Lanning and his coaching staff have accumulated a consensus top-five recruiting class in the 2027 cycle, with five-star wide receiver Dakota Guerrant and four-star quarterback Will Mencl leading the bunch. But the program’s dominant run in the upcoming recruiting class could become even more impressive next month, with multiple targets set to announce their commitment.

According to Rivals’ Hayes Fawcett on Wednesday evening, 2027 four-star athlete Tae Walden has reached his top five schools, with the Ducks being part of the mix.

Can Lanning, Oregon Secure Walden?

Walden, as one of the most dynamic playmakers in the country, has quickly become a hot prospect in the upcoming recruiting cycle. Currently, the highly regarded talent is the No. 4-ranked prospect in the state of Tennessee, as well as the No. 6 athlete in the 2027 class, per 247Sports’ Composite.

After a terrific sophomore campaign at Collierville High School, Walden built off his successful stint during his 2025 season as a pass catcher and a defensive back. As a junior, the electric recruit recorded 42 receptions for 912 receiving yards and 10 touchdowns, while also notching 28 tackles, 17 pass breakups, and five interceptions on the defensive side of the ball. Walden’s terrific run with the Dragons last year paved the way for him to be a part of The Opening Finals in 2026.

Standing at 6-foot-2, 165 lbs., it’s clear that Walden must add more to his frame before he arrives at the college level. However, his elite quickness off the line of scrimmage allows him to be a threat in the passing game with the ball in his hands, while also being a key reason for his success as a cornerback. In addition to his athleticism, Walden is a polished route-runner as a wide receiver, and his stout ball tracking ability comes in handy as a defender.

Now, with the Ducks continuing their efforts in the 2027 recruiting class, Lanning could hit a home run if he is able to land the impressive high school prospect. Walden has set his commitment date for Jul 1st, making the first day of the month important for Oregon.
