Dan Lanning’s hot streak hit a snag as four-star tackle Caden Moss chose Ohio State, forcing the Ducks to pivot toward in-state talent to bolster their trenches.
The Oregon Ducks and head coach Dan Lanning have made massive moves within the 2027 recruiting class throughout the course of the summer.
This offseason, Lanning and the Ducks quickly became one of the best programs in the 2027 recruiting cycle, as Oregon possesses a total of 21 commits heading into the month of July. However, the Ducks’ hot stint on the recruiting trail hit a speed bump last week after missing out on a top target in the class.
According to Rivals’ Hayes Fawcett last week, 2027 four-star offensive tackle Caden Moss has committed to the Ohio State Buckeyes over the likes of the Ole Miss Rebels, the LSU Tigers, and the Oregon Ducks.
What’s Next For Oregon in 2027 Class?
Moss, an incredible talent in the 2027 class, was a massive target for the Ducks in the upcoming recruiting class. As of this month, the stout lineman is the No. 3 prospect in the state of Mississippi, as well as the No. 7-ranked offensive tackle in the 2027 class, per 247Sports’ Composite.
As Moss began to make a name for himself at Jackson Academy, Lanning and the Ducks would eventually offer him back in August of 2025. The early push for the Mississippi native would pay off for Oregon, as the program would crack Moss’s top five schools. This led to him taking an official visit to Eugene in May, but his official visit to Columbus would ultimately allow for head coach Ryan Day to secure another commitment in his 2027 class.
Now, with Moss out of the picture for the Ducks, the newest member of the Big 10 Conference will have to look elsewhere for an offensive tackle in the 2027 class. Luckily for Lanning and the coaching staff, Oregon is in the running for 2027 four-star offensive tackle Gecova Doyal, who is a consensus top-five prospect in the state of Washington. Doyal took an official visit to Oregon earlier this month, but the Ducks must fight off the Washington Huskies and the Utah Utes for the up-and-coming offensive tackle.
Still, despite missing out on Moss, Lanning’s 2027 class features a pair of four-star offensive tackle commits in Cameron Wagner and Avery Michael. Both linemen are top-40 offensive tackles in the 2027 class, and with the potential of adding Doyal, Oregon could easily recover from missing out on Moss.
