Penn State HC Matt Campbell Quadruples Down on QB Rocco Becht

Penn State head coach Matt Campbell quadruples down on his quarterback Rocco Becht.

In three of the last four weeks of the Penn State season, quarterback Rocco Becht has played well below average. He has struggled mightily since Penn State began Big Ten play, and the result has been a four-game losing streak that has set the Nittany Lions back.

With that said, prior to Penn State's game against the Purdue Boilermakers, Matt Campbell spoke on Becht, and he again claimed faith in his signal caller. He said that the team and the staff have "complete faith" in Rocco Becht at the quarterback position, and they are not even considering a change at the quarterback position.

He went on to say that the Nittany Lions backup, Alex Manske, will have his time in the sun, but that time is not right now. It's Becht's team for now and going forward.

I'm all for sticking with a struggling quarterback through some hard times, but at some point you have to hit the eject button.

In this situation specifically, I do believe that Campbell is making a mistake. It's not a mistake to say that Becht isn't a capable player, but it has been a disaster over the last month, and something needs to change.

Not only that, if Campbell wants to be around Happy Valley for a long time, now would be a really good time to begin developing a young quarterback and letting him play in a situation where there is literally zero pressure on him to perform.

Becht, on the other hand, is wrapping up his fifth year of college football, and unfortunately, there is not really any future for him as a player anymore. His best days are behind him, and it is time to start the succession plan.

Now, I could hear an argument that they want to wait until after the Washington game to make a switch, and I could listen to that. However, even at that, I would want my young future quarterback to get some experience in a massive environment with again, zero pressure.

I think that Campbell is making a massive mistake in sticking with Becht through this really tough stretch. Campbell, unfortunately, is going to feel his seat start to heat up, especially if this goes south this Saturday against Purdue.

This game is the biggest "must-win" game on the calendar thus far in the season, and there is no other option but for Penn State to win this football game. It will not be easy, and the Nittany Lions are going to go at it behind Becht's arm.
