Week one in the NFL was all about the Penn State tight ends as they all showed out in their first game.
Week one of the NFL season can be summed up in one position group: former Penn State tight ends.
It was not one, not two, not three, but four Nittany Lion tight ends found the end zone and, more importantly, set the tone for just how important each will be to their teams this year.
Brenton Strange got things started in Jacksonville when he snagged a sweet touchdown from his quarterback, Trevor Lawrence. The Jaguars showed their strength very loudly. The first was that they are legit, and they have plans to be a very good club this year. The second thing was that they undressed the Cleveland Browns and showed the world just how far away they are.
Next up was out in Pittsburgh when Pat Friermuth continued his incredible connection with Aaron Rodgers. "Muth," as he is affectionately referred to in Pittsburgh, has put together one heck of a career for the Steelers. He is entering year six with the Steelers and has been as reliable as they ever could have asked him to be.
Then, it was back to Ohio when Cincinnati tight end Mike Gesicki hauled in a touchdown from his quarterback Joe Burrow. Those two were the engine to get the Bengals' season started in the right direction against the Baker Mayfield-led Buccaneers.
Finally, it was in Indianapolis that Tyler Warren got a garbage-time score as the Colts were getting drubbed by the Baltimore Ravens. Warren is possibly the one in that group who has the highest potential to become one of the great tight ends in the game.
Not only was the start of the season a solid one for these guys, but it also underscored the bigger story here. These are four of the best tight ends in football, and they all come from the same spot.
They don't quite climb all the way into the elite category, but what they are is an incredibly reliable bunch that will be around their franchises for many years.
Each school has a position that it is known for at the highest level. Penn State they are known for the tight end position because of these types of players.
The best part about it all is that Matt Campbell is continuing the tradition right away. He brought his prized possession from Iowa State along with him: Ben Brahmer, who hauled in five catches for 79 yards and two touchdowns in week two for the Nittany Lions.
It was good then, it is good now and it will be good for years to come.
