The Penn State Nittany Lions’ Week 13 matchup against the Nebraska Cornhuskers could become a historical night for star running back Kaytron Allen.
Penn State Roundtable Podcast, Ep. 3: James Franklin Takes Virginia Tech Job
Charlie Baduini and I of Roundtable Penn State met for our third podcast episode of the year, perhaps the biggest one of the year, after James Franklin decided to take the Virginia Tech job.
As a former four-star prospect in the 2022 recruiting class, Allen has easily lived up to the hype surrounding his name, rushing for 3,794 yards and a whopping 68 touchdowns over the course of his four years in State College.
His incredible career with the Nittany Lions now puts him in a position to break a record that not even former star running back Saquon Barkley could reach with the program.
Prior to Saturday night’s primetime matchup, Allen is just 139 rushing yards away from breaking the program’s all-time leading rusher mark, which has been held by former Nittany Lions standout Evan Royster.
Earlier this season, Allen passed Curt Warner for career rushing yards to claim the No. 3 spot on the list, and is just 50 rushing yards away from jumping Barkley in the record books.
Luckily for Allen and the fanbase, the senior rusher has a perfect opportunity to overtake Royster for the top spot in Week 13 against Nebraska. While the Cornhuskers’ defense continues to be one of the best against the pass, the fellow Big 10 Conference member has struggled to defend the run this season.
In 2025, Nebraska allowed an average of 161.1 rushing yards per game, which is the fifth-highest margin in the conference. The lack of support in the run game was made clear earlier in the season, as head coach Matt Rhule’s defense gave up 149 rushing yards and one touchdown on 18 carries to Michigan Wolverines’ Justice Haynes.
In addition to Allen breaking the record on Saturday night, senior running back Nicholas Singleton could also make a jump on the list. Singleton is 68 yards away from Warner at the No. 4 spot and could easily reach this mark in Week 13.
If Allen does not reach 139 rushing yards against the Cornhuskers, the veteran playmaker would have to achieve the record against the Rutgers Scarlet Knights. Depending on how well Allen plays in Week 13, the future 2026 NFL Draft prospect could claim the No. 1 spot with ease, as Rutgers’ run defense is one of the worst at the FBS level.
