Former Mustangs Preston Stone is heading back to Dallas after a one-year gap, as he looks to take the next step of his career into the NFL.
A familiar face from SMU is making a return trip to the Metroplex for a visit with a potential NFL suitor.
Former Mustangs quarterback Preston Stone reportedly had a meeting with the Dallas Cowboys at their Local Pro Day. Stone spent four seasons at SMU before finishing his college career at Northwestern.
Across all five seasons, he totaled over 6,000 passing yards and just shy of 50 touchdowns. In Stone's final game, he threw for around 225 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions to lead the Wildcats to a GameAbove Sports Bowl win over Central Michigan
In his last year with the Mustangs, Stone led them to a 10-2 record in their final season in the American Athletic Conference before Kevin Jennings would take over in the AAC title game and never relinquish the starting role back to Stone.
Originally a Dallas native before even joining SMU, Stone committed to the Mustangs as a four-star recruit from Dallas Parish Episcopal School. Fast forward five years later and he has the eyes of his hometown NFL squad.
The Cowboys are allegedly interested in adding a fresh face to the quarterback position for rookie and mandatory minicamps and depth behind Dak Prescott, Joe Milton III and the newly signed Sam Howell.
According to those at the team's local pro day, Cowboys staff spoke highly of Stone and were vocal about his potential to fulfill their want for additional depth.
NFL reporter Aaron Wilson currently projected Stone to head off the board in Day 3 of the NFL Draft, which could be a prime position for Dallas to pick him up with one of their late-round selections.
Even without being selected during the draft, Dallas could sign Stone to UDFA deal, which seems increasingly likely due to the desire to use him for the aforementioned preseason camps.
Speaking of alternate scenarios, Stone could easily be taken by another interested team at either the draft or as a UDFA. Dallas may be the ones showing the most interest as of now, but that can always change between now and draft day.
While much remains to be determined, it would undoubtedly be a storybook situation for Stone to return to his hometown and the place he began his college career to take the next step in his football journey.
Regardless of whether the homecoming celebration will actually take place between Stone and Dallas, the five-year veteran seems primed to continue his football journey at the professional level in some form or fashion.
