The schedule gives SMU a clear path to nine wins, but the Mustangs need to win the close games to reach the ACC title and College Football Playoff goals set inside the program.

Oddsmakers have set SMU's regular-season win total at 8.5 for 2026, with the over listed at -140 and the under at +112 on FanDuel. For a program that has won at least nine games in each of the last few seasons, the number feels fair and slightly conservative. The underlying math explains why.

ESPN's analytics give SMU a 70% or better chance to win in eight of its 12 games, headlined by near-locks against UC Davis at 97.3% and Missouri State at 94.8%. The Mustangs also receive comfortable projections against Boston College, California, Stanford, Wake Forest, Syracuse and Virginia.

The other four games decide the season. Virginia Tech sits at 66.2% at home, while the two true toss-ups come on the road. Florida State sits at 51.5%, while Louisville is just under at 46.7%. The trip to Notre Dame in November projects at 10.5%.

That breakdown explains why the line sits where it does. SMU should be favored in nine games and is a heavy underdog in only one. The difference between eight wins and 10 comes down to Virginia Tech at home and the two road toss-ups. Win those games and this is a double-digit-win team. Lose them and 8.5 suddenly looks like the right number.

The over is appealing because of how the schedule breaks down. If the Mustangs hold serve in the games they are supposed to win, they reach eight victories before touching a single toss-up. Even a scenario in which SMU loses both road coin flips at Florida State and Louisville, along with the trip to South Bend, still leaves a clear path to nine wins.

The flip side is that this schedule has more traps than it appears to have. Road trips to Syracuse and Stanford are the kind of games that get overlooked in July and cost teams in October. Virginia Tech, at a 66.2% projection, is closer than the number suggests for a home game. Lose any two of those games alongside the expected losses and the under looks much smarter.

None of that is how Rhett Lashlee or Kevin Jennings is framing the season, though. This is a program that reached the ACC Championship Game and the College Football Playoff in its first year in the league, then finished one win short of returning to Charlotte in 2025. Jennings is back for his senior season after throwing for 3,641 yards and 26 touchdowns, and the roster around him returns plenty of production.

Neither the coach nor his quarterback entered the season thinking about how to clear 8.5 wins.

The internal bar is the ACC title and a return to the playoff. Reaching those goals almost certainly requires 10 or 11 wins rather than nine. Lashlee has spent his tenure exceeding outside expectations for this program, and a preseason win total will not change how he approaches the season.

The books have SMU pegged as a very good team that should win nine or 10 games. Lashlee is coaching like a man who thinks that is the floor.
