No. 21 SMU brings Kevin Jennings and one of the nation’s most explosive offenses into Saturday’s ACC home matchup against banged-up Boston College.
No. 21 SMU returns to Ford Stadium on Saturday with a chance to build some momentum in the ACC race, and the Mustangs appear to have a favorable matchup against a Boston College team arriving in Dallas with major injury and illness questions.
SMU enters at 3-1 overall and 1-1 in the ACC after beating Missouri State 34-24. Boston College is 2-2 and 0-1 in conference play following a 21-14 loss to Virginia Tech.
The biggest mismatch may come when Kevin Jennings and the SMU offense are on the field.
Jennings has thrown for 1,453 yards through four games and is coming off a huge afternoon against Missouri State, completing 33 of 39 passes for 464 yards and three touchdowns. He also completed a school-record 21 consecutive passes during the victory.
Boston College already had enough to worry about before its roster began thinning.
Head coach Bill O'Brien said this week that an illness has been moving through his team. Defensive lineman Demetrius Ballard missed the Virginia Tech game with the flu, while defensive end Kris Jones remains uncertain after aggravating an ankle injury.
Tight end Brady Clough, who has missed two consecutive games, could potentially return.
BC was missing 12 players agaist Virginia Tech, including five who have started this season.
SMU isn't completely healthy either.
Leading receiver Yamir Knight is questionable with an undisclosed injury after exploding for 11 catches, 164 yards and a touchdown against Missouri State. Knight leads SMU with 27 receptions for 345 yards and two touchdowns.
Wide receiver Yannick Smith is another name to monitor after missing last week's game.
That's important, but SMU has considerably more offensive depth than Boston College.
Jalen Cooper caught eight passes for 125 yards against Missouri State, while tight ends Theo Melin Ohrstrom and Randy Pittman Jr. have combined to give Jennings reliable options in the middle of the field and red zone.
Then there's running back Kendrick Raphael, who has rushed for 373 yards and five touchdowns, averaging six yards per carry.
Even if Knight or Smith is limited, Rhett Lashlee still has plenty of ways to attack.
The Eagles present a different challenge offensively.
Quarterback Mason McKenzie isn't just BC's leading passer ... he's also its leading rusher. McKenzie has thrown for 759 yards while running for another 363 yards, making quarterback containment one of SMU's biggest defensive priorities.
Boston College's offense hasn't produced consistently enough through the air, so SMU's defensive front needs to keep McKenzie inside the pocket and force the Eagles into obvious passing situations.
That plays directly into one of SMU's strengths.
The Mustangs have been excellent on third down, holding opponents to roughly 20 percent conversions through four games. If SMU wins first and second down, BC could struggle to sustain enough drives to keep Jennings off the field.
The warning for the Mustangs comes from last week.
Missouri State jumped to a 10-0 lead before SMU finally took control. Against Louisville, the Mustangs allowed 41 points in their only loss.
Boston College may be shorthanded, but giving the Eagles short fields, committing turnovers or allowing McKenzie to create explosive plays with his legs would give an underdog exactly what it needs.
SMU also has history on its side.
The Mustangs have beaten Boston College in each of the past two seasons, including a 45-13 rout in Chestnut Hill in 2025. SMU also won 38-28 in Dallas in 2024 after BC won the 2023 Fenway Bowl matchup.
On paper, Saturday favors the Mustangs heavily.
If Jennings protects the football, SMU contains McKenzie and the Mustangs avoid another sluggish opening quarter, this is a game they should be able to control.
The biggest question before kickoff may simply be who's actually healthy enough to play.
