SMU quarterback Kevin Jennings enters 2026 with serious national buzz after a 3,641-yard season and a spot on the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award watch list.
Kevin Jennings isn’t flying under the radar anymore.
The SMU quarterback has been named to the 2026 Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award watch list, adding another national honor after a breakout 2025 season that established him as one of the most productive passers in college football.
And the numbers make the case pretty clearly.
Jennings threw for 3,641 yards last season, ranking third in the ACC and seventh nationally. He also set career highs with 300 completions, 26 touchdown passes and a 66.0% completion rate.
That’s not just solid production.
That’s the kind of season that puts a quarterback into award conversations before the next one even starts.
Jennings also brought a rushing element to the offense, becoming one of only 11 FBS quarterbacks with at least 25 passing touchdowns and four rushing scores in 2025.
That versatility matters.
SMU doesn’t need Jennings to become a completely different player in 2026. The Mustangs need him to take everything he already does well and become even more consistent in the biggest moments.
That’s where the Golden Arm conversation gets interesting.
The award isn’t only about raw statistics. It also emphasizes leadership, character and academic commitment, making the preseason watch list a broader recognition of the quarterback’s overall impact.
For Jennings, the opportunity is obvious.
He’s already proven he can move the football, protect his completion percentage and produce touchdowns at a high level. Now he gets a full season to show whether he belongs among the very best quarterbacks in the country.
The watch list will eventually be trimmed to semifinalists and finalists before the winner is announced in December, with the award ceremony scheduled for Dec. 9 in Baltimore.
That’s a long way off.
But if Jennings comes close to matching or improving on last year’s numbers, his name should remain in the conversation deep into the season.
SMU has plenty riding on its senior quarterback.
The good news is Jennings has already shown he can handle the spotlight. Now he gets to prove he can own it.
