Kevin Jennings threw for 337 yards and five touchdowns as No. 17 SMU overwhelmed UC Davis 56-10 in its 2026 home opener in Dallas.
No. 17 SMU football didn’t leave much room for drama in its home opener.
Kevin Jennings carved up UC Davis for 337 passing yards and five touchdowns Saturday as the Mustangs rolled to a 56-10 victory at Ford Stadium, improving to 2-0 after opening the season with a road win at Florida State.
Jennings was almost untouchable through the air. The SMU quarterback completed 14 of 16 passes, an 87.5 percent completion rate, and didn’t throw an interception.
His 337 yards came on just 16 attempts, highlighting how explosive the Mustangs were when they pushed the ball downfield.
SMU finished with 547 total yards, including 454 through the air, while averaging 14.2 yards per pass attempt as a team.
The game was essentially over by halftime.
SMU exploded for 28 points in the second quarter after being held scoreless in the first, then added seven more in the third and 21 in the fourth. UC Davis managed just 10 points and finished with 233 total yards.
The Mustangs’ receiving production was spread around enough to make defending Jennings a problem.
Yulkeith Brown Knight led SMU with 62 receiving yards on three catches, while Darrion McFall also made an impact both as a receiver and runner. McFall finished with 46 rushing yards on six carries.
SMU’s passing game was especially efficient considering Jennings was coming off a career-best 430-yard, three-touchdown performance in the Mustangs’ 27-24 win at Florida State.
Through two games, the veteran quarterback has already established himself as one of the central pieces of SMU’s push toward another big season.
The defense did its part as well.
UC Davis quarterback J. Kollock completed just 8 of 10 passes for 88 yards, and the Aggies were limited to 171 passing yards overall. SMU forced two turnovers, including an interception, while keeping UC Davis to 2-of-13 on third down.
Perhaps the biggest takeaway wasn’t simply that SMU beat an FCS opponent. It was how decisively the Mustangs handled the business in front of them.
After surviving a difficult road opener at Florida State, SMU came home and delivered the kind of dominant performance expected from a nationally ranked team.
Jennings was the engine behind it, and two games into the season, the Mustangs’ passing attack already looks dangerous.
