
DALLAS - SMU women’s tennis is back in the national spotlight - and now the Mustangs are ready for the ACC stage.
Ranked No. 23 in the latest ITA team poll, SMU enters conference play with a 6-1 record and its highest national ranking since 2010.
The Mustangs will open ACC competition on the road, facing Virginia Tech on Friday before a marquee matchup Sunday against No. 15 Virginia.
Momentum is firmly on SMU’s side. The Mustangs are riding a four-match winning streak after a dominant 7-0 sweep of UT Arlington.
In that victory, Sophie Llewellyn clinched the match with a straight-sets win, improving her spring singles mark to five victories. Llewellyn, now ranked No. 66 nationally in singles, continues to build on her breakthrough NCAA Championship appearance last season.
Doubles has been a consistent strength for SMU, which owns a 14-2 record in doubles play and has secured the doubles point in every match this spring.
Caroline McGinley has been especially reliable, remaining unbeaten in singles (5-0) and holding a perfect 7-0 doubles record.
Natalie Stasny is also undefeated in singles at 6-0, giving the Mustangs experienced leadership at the top of the lineup.
Sunday’s showdown with Virginia will provide a major early ACC test. The Cavaliers feature five ranked singles players, led by No. 33 Annabelle Xu, and enter the weekend ranked No. 15 nationally.
The Mustangs have already proven they can compete with top programs, earning ranked wins over Arizona and Baylor this season.
Under first-year head coach Kelcy McKenna, SMU is blending veteran leadership with a wave of newcomers, creating a balanced and confident lineup.
With conference play underway and a top-25 ranking in hand, SMU now looks to show it belongs among the ACC’s elite.
