Steve Lockton’s family foundation is giving $1 million to SMU’s Student-Athlete Benefit Fund, strengthening support for Mustang athletes.
DALLAS - SMU Athletics received a major boost with Mustang Partners announcing a $1 million gift from the Steve Lockton Family Foundation to the Student-Athlete Benefit Fund.
The donation is another significant investment in SMU student-athletes from Steve Lockton, a 1989 SMU graduate whose family has deep ties to the university.
His daughter, Carley, graduated from SMU’s Dedman College of Humanities and Sciences in 2022, while his son, Stephen, is currently enrolled at SMU.
For SMU, the gift arrives at an important time as college athletics continues to evolve and schools look for new ways to support athletes both on and off the field.
The Student-Athlete Benefit Fund gives donors a direct path to help SMU athletes with resources tied to their overall development.
Lockton has already played a major role in supporting projects across campus. He previously made a $1 million contribution to the Garry Weber End Zone Complex at Gerald J. Ford Stadium, helping support one of SMU football’s most visible facility upgrades.
SMU athletic director Damon Evans praised Lockton’s continued commitment, pointing to the impact the latest gift can have as the Mustangs work to compete nationally.
Lockton said SMU has meant a great deal to his family across generations, making the opportunity to give back especially meaningful.
