SMU basketball is suddenly staring at a March problem. Just a few weeks ago, the SMU Mustangs looked comfortably headed for the NCAA Tournament, projected as a mid-seed with momentum building in their first season navigating the ACC gauntlet.
Fast forward to the end of the regular season, and the picture has changed dramatically.
A four-game losing streak, capped by a 91-78 loss at Florida State, has shoved SMU squarely onto the NCAA Tournament bubble.
And the biggest difference? B.J. Edwards isn’t on the floor.
The Mustangs’ starting guard has been sidelined with an ankle injury since late February, and his absence has created a ripple effect across both ends of the court.
Edwards’ stat line tells the story of what SMU is missing ... 12.7 points, 5.9 rebounds, 4.9 assists, and 2.3 steals per game. He’s been the engine that kept the Mustangs balanced offensively while anchoring their perimeter defense.
Without him, SMU hasn’t looked like the same team.
Before the injury, the Mustangs were humming offensively, averaging 86.7 points per game. Since Edwards went down, that number has dipped sharply to 72.8 points per game, while the defense has allowed seven more points per contest during the same stretch.
Head coach Andy Enfield knows there’s no easy fix at this point in the season.
“We're trying to learn how to play without [BJ] in crunch time of the season, which is not the right time to do that,” Enfield said. “No one's gonna feel sorry for us.”
The timing couldn’t be worse.
Instead of entering March with confidence, SMU now heads into the ACC Tournament as the No. 11 seed, facing a steep climb just to stabilize its NCAA resume.
The Mustangs will open play on Tuesday in Charlotte against the 14-seed, which will be either Syracuse or Wake Forest.
But that’s only the beginning of the challenge.
If SMU hopes to revive its tournament outlook, the path likely requires beating No. 6 Louisville and No. 3 Miami in back-to-back games.
In other words, the Mustangs need their best basketball now, not in January.
March is unforgiving, and SMU has learned the hard way how quickly a promising season can wobble.
The next few days in Charlotte will determine whether the Mustangs still have a seat at the NCAA Tournament table or if their postseason hopes fade before the real madness begins.
