SMU basketball has dropped into the NCAA Tournament “Work To Do” tier after a late losing streak put the Mustangs’ March Madness hopes in danger.

The SMU basketball NCAA Tournament hopes have officially entered dangerous territory.

Once trending safely toward March Madness, the Mustangs are now firmly planted on the NCAA Tournament bubble, landing in ESPN’s “Work To Do” category as Selection Sunday approaches.

For Andy Enfield’s SMU squad, the margin for error has vanished.

Just a few weeks ago, SMU looked like a near lock for an at-large bid. Advanced projection models gave the Mustangs better than a 90 percent chance of reaching the NCAA Tournament, thanks to key wins and a strong overall resume as they navigated the ACC basketball gauntlet.

Then everything unraveled.

A brutal four-game losing streak - including defeats to California, Stanford, Miami, and Florida State - slammed the brakes on SMU’s momentum and knocked the Mustangs squarely into bubble chaos.

Those losses didn’t just damage confidence; they torpedoed their projected tournament odds.

SMU’s at-large probability has now plunged to roughly 39 percent, leaving the Mustangs in a precarious position heading into the ACC Tournament in Charlotte.

The biggest problem is timing.

Late-season losses tend to linger longer in the minds of the NCAA selection committee, especially when they come against teams hovering around the middle of the conference standings.

SMU’s skid came at the worst possible moment, turning what once looked like a comfortable resume into one that suddenly requires explanation.

Still, the Mustangs are not out of the fight.

Guard Boopie Miller, who has delivered several explosive performances this season - including a 32-point outing late in conference play - remains one of the ACC’s most dangerous offensive weapons.

His ability to create scoring bursts could become SMU’s most valuable asset during the conference tournament.

The Mustangs also still carry several resume positives, including notable victories earlier in the season that could help offset their late struggles.

But the equation is simple now.

SMU likely needs to win at least one or two games in the ACC Tournament to feel comfortable about hearing its name called on Selection Sunday.

In other words, the Mustangs have reached the most dramatic phase of college basketball’s postseason equation.

For SMU basketball, the message from the selection committee projections is crystal clear: the work isn’t finished.
