Troubled former SMU wide receiver Rashee Rice is to serve 30 days in jail after testing positive for marijuana, violating his probation.
The string of troubling news surrounding former SMU star Rashee Rice continued this week as the Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver violated his probation after testing positive for marijuana.
Rice is ordered by Dallas County to serve 30 days in jail, which means he will be absent from the Chiefs' OTAs and mandatory minicamp. The Texas State Attorney's Office said Rice is ordered to serve time now as part of his original sentence for his high-speed hit-and-run in 2024.
According to KSHB 41 in Kansas City, Rice's documents in court state he will be released from jail on June 16.
The Chiefs' offseason training activities and workouts are scheduled to take place May 26-28 and June 1-3. Mandatory minicamp is set for June 9-11.
The Chiefs have reportedly declined to comment on the situation.
His probation comes via a plea agreement that settled an incident that left multiple people injured on a highway in Dallas in 2024. Rice pleaded guilty to two counts of third-degree felony charges and was sentenced to five years of probation in July 2025.
"When someone with Mr. Rice’s public platform chooses to drive so recklessly, there is a responsibility to acknowledge the danger posed to others and take accountability," Dallas County District Attorney John Creuzot said after Rice's plea last summer.
"We are extremely fortunate that no lives were lost that day, and Mr. Rice is fortunate to have walked away unharmed. We hope he takes this as an opportunity to mature and leads by example moving forward."
Rice, who turned 26 years old on April 22, is preparing to enter the fourth and final year of his rookie contract with the Chiefs. After only playing four games in 2024 due to suffering a major knee injury, he returned in 2025 for eight games, but notably missed the first half of the season as he served a six-game suspension for violating the NFL's personal conduct policy.
The suspension forced Rice to forfeit $421,824 of his 2025 salary, which totaled a cap hit of $1.35 million, according to Spotrac.
Rice's full rookie contract after being drafted by Kansas City in the second round in 2023 is worth $6.49 million over four years.
With the Chiefs thus far, Rice has made 156 receptions for 1,797 yards and 14 touchdowns. Half of those touchdowns and over half of his career receiving yards came in his rookie season.
With the Mustangs from 2019-2022, the 6-1, 189-pounder totaled 233 catches for 3,111 yards and 25 touchdowns.
