Will Sides captured a share of the Lewis Chitengwa Memorial title as SMU men’s golf placed third and heads to the ACC Championship with momentum.

SMU men’s golf got another huge performance from Will Sides, and it came at the perfect time.

The Mustangs closed the Lewis Chitengwa Memorial in third place, while Sides grabbed a share of the individual title at 16-under and continued one of the best seasons in program history.

For SMU men’s golf, the headline starts with Sides. The Tulsa native earned his third win of the 2025-26 season and the fourth of his career, putting him level with Kelly Kraft for second-most tournament titles by a Mustang since 1985.

Only Colt Knost, with seven, has more. Sides and Knost are now the only SMU players to record three wins in a single season, which puts this run in rare company.

Sides didn’t make it easy on himself early in the final round, but he responded like a player in total control of his game.

He erased an early deficit with a birdie surge and stayed in the fight all afternoon before finishing tied for the top spot.

Across the entire 54-hole event, he made just one bogey, a remarkable display of consistency. His season scoring average also dropped to 69.59, now the best single-season mark ever recorded by a Mustang.

Ben Steinmann gave SMU another major boost. The freshman finished tied for fourth at 11-under, collecting his second top-five finish of the year after already posting one victory this season.

Steinmann did much of his damage on the par-5s, where he played the week at 9-under, matching the best mark in the field.

As a team, SMU finished at 23-under, trailing only No. 2 Virginia and No. 25 Florida State.

That’s another strong result for a program looking to build confidence before the ACC Championship in Panama City, Florida.

The depth wasn’t quite enough to push the Mustangs into the top two, but SMU still got steady efforts from Gabe Post, Christian Clark and Zachary Kingsland.

With Sides playing at a record-setting level and Steinmann rising fast, SMU heads into the postseason looking dangerous.
