SMU men’s tennis returns to Dallas with momentum, a rising national profile, and Trevor Svajda back at No. 1 ahead of two key ACC matches.
DALLAS - SMU men’s tennis is rolling back into Dallas with swagger, momentum, and the nation’s top singles player setting the tone.
The No. 29 Mustangs return home this weekend for two crucial ACC matches against Miami and Florida State, and the energy around this team feels different now.
SMU isn’t just stacking wins. It’s starting to look like a dangerous team nobody wants to deal with this spring.
The headline, of course, is Trevor Svajda. He’s back at No. 1 in the ITA singles rankings, and he’s earned every bit of it. Svajda is 15-1 in singles this spring, has dropped only five sets in 40 sets played, and is coming off another monster stretch that reminded everyone why he’s one of the most electric players in college tennis.
He’s beating elite competition and dragging SMU into bigger national conversations. And the Mustangs are giving him plenty of support.
SMU enters the weekend at 14-7 overall and 4-2 in ACC play, fresh off a 2-1 road trip that included a statement win over No. 8 Baylor, the program’s biggest-ranked victory in years.
The Mustangs also knocked off Cal and battled No. 24 Stanford, showing they can handle pressure, rankings, and tough environments.
Alex Finkelstein, now ranked No. 102 in singles, gives SMU another weapon in the lineup, while the roster’s depth has helped fuel one of the stronger stretches under Grant Chen.
This team has also been cashing in on weekly recognition, with the Mustangs collecting more ACC Player of the Week honors than anyone else in the league.
Now the focus shifts to protecting home court at Styslinger/Altec Tennis Complex.
Miami and Florida State both bring capable lineups, and Florida State especially arrives with multiple ranked singles players.
But SMU has the hotter hand, the bigger star, and the kind of momentum that can flip a good season into a serious one.
This weekend feels like more than two matches. For SMU men’s tennis, it feels like another chance to prove this surge is real.
