SMU spring practice is spotlighting a deep, versatile running back room led by Kendrick Raphael and backed by size, speed and intriguing new options.

SMU spring practice is already offering a clear early storyline for the 2026 SMU football team ... the Mustangs running back room looks deep, versatile and built to create matchup problems.

As the roster settles into spring workouts, Grayson Singleton with Locked on SMU noted that it’s hard not to notice how much size and flexibility SMU has stacked in the backfield.

That starts with Kendrick Raphael, the transfer from Cal who appears positioned to lead the group. At 5-11 and 200 pounds, Raphael gives SMU a back who can handle inside runs, work the perimeter and contribute as a receiver. If the Mustangs want a featured option, he looks like the obvious candidate.

But what makes this room especially interesting is everything behind him.

Doak Green brings a bigger frame at 6-0 and 220 pounds, giving SMU a tougher between-the-tackles option with enough athleticism to stay involved in multiple situations. Derrick McFall, listed at 5-11 and 187 pounds, offers a different type of weapon. His skill set suggests he can move around the formation, line up in the backfield, or create problems in space.

Then there’s the wild-card element. LJ Rhone, previously known as a wide receiver, is now listed at running back at 6-2 and 200 pounds. That kind of position flexibility could give the Mustangs more creativity in motion packages, empty sets and matchup-based play calls.

Freshman Christian Rhodes, one of SMU’s top 2026 signees, also looks physically ready to compete sooner rather than later at 6-1 and 205 pounds. Whether his role comes immediately or grows over time, he adds another layer to an already crowded room.

SMU had to replace lost production after TJ Harden’s departure and Chris Johnson Jr.’s transfer to Clemson. This offseason, though, the Mustangs may have done more than reload; they may have upgraded.

If spring practice is any hint, SMU’s backfield has a chance to be one of the most dynamic position groups on the roster.
