SMU women’s golf enters the final round in third place at the Huntington Bank Collegiate, with Mackenzie Lee one shot off the individual lead.

SMU women’s golf put itself right in the middle of the title chase Monday at the Huntington Bank Collegiate, turning in two strong rounds at Trinity Forest and heading into the final day in third place.

The Mustangs posted back-to-back 6-under team scores to reach 12-under for the tournament, leaving them five shots behind leader UCLA and one stroke behind Oklahoma State.

That position gives SMU women’s golf a real opportunity to close the regular season with a statement result on its home course.

More importantly, the Mustangs are doing it against one of the strongest fields they’ve seen this spring, sitting ahead of several nationally ranked teams while staying within striking distance of the top.

Mackenzie Lee again led the way for SMU and looked every bit like the headliner of the tournament.

Lee fired consecutive rounds of 68 to get to 8-under, leaving her tied for second and just one shot behind Oklahoma State’s Marta Silchenko.

Lee’s second round featured one of the best stretches of the day, as she birdied four of five holes from No. 10 through No. 14.

Through 36 holes, she made only one bogey, another reminder of how steady she’s been throughout her standout career.

Her career scoring average also dipped to 71.59, extending the SMU program record she already owns.

Emily Odwin also gave the Mustangs a valuable boost. The senior sits at 3-under and tied for 12th after rounds of 70 and 71, continuing the consistency that has made her one of SMU’s most dependable players.

Her season scoring average now sits at 71.93, one of the best single-season marks in program history.

Kirra St-Laurent, competing as an individual, made one of the biggest moves on the leaderboard.

After opening with a 74, she erupted for a 68 in the second round, highlighted by five birdies in a six-hole stretch and eight total birdies on the day.

With Grace Jin at even par and both Celine Chen and Yoonjeong Huh still in the mix, SMU has enough depth to make Tuesday interesting. The Mustangs are in position. Now they’ll try to finish the job.
