SMU women’s tennis dropped a 4-2 match to No. 23 Cal on Friday despite singles wins from Amelie Van Impe and Addison Comiskey in Dallas.

SMU women’s tennis came up short Friday afternoon in Dallas, falling 4-2 to No. 23 Cal in a competitive ACC showdown to open the final weekend of the regular season.

The loss dropped the Mustangs to 14-6 overall and 6-5 in conference play, while Cal improved to 11-6 and 8-4 in the ACC.

For SMU, the match was defined by a strong response in singles after an early setback in doubles. The Mustangs had lost the doubles point only three times all season entering the day, but Cal grabbed the opening edge by winning courts two and three.

That early swing proved important in a match that stayed tight deep into singles play.

SMU still found big moments. The Mustangs’ top doubles team of No. 21 Amelie Van Impe and Caroline McGinley delivered a 6-3 win on court one, continuing an impressive spring.

The duo improved to 14-2 overall and 9-2 against ACC opponents, even though Cal claimed the point.

In singles, Van Impe once again gave SMU a boost. The No. 59-ranked Mustang turned in one of the best wins of the day, taking down No. 13 Berta Passola Folch in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2.

It marked Van Impe’s third ranked victory of the season and helped swing momentum back toward the Mustangs.

Freshman Addison Comiskey followed with another impressive comeback. After dropping the first set, she stormed back for a 3-6, 6-1, 6-2 win to extend her streak to six straight victories.

Comiskey now has 12 dual-match wins, tied for the most on the team, and six ACC singles wins, matching Van Impe for the team lead.

But Cal answered with wins on courts four, two and six to seal the match. The clincher came in a three-set battle on court six, where Sophie Hernandez edged Natalie Stasny 6-4, 5-7, 7-5.

Caroline McGinley’s match was left unfinished with the SMU senior holding a 5-4 lead in the third set.

SMU will close the regular season Sunday at home against No. 47 Stanford.
