SMU women’s soccer added Chassion Griggs as assistant coach and goalkeeper coach, bringing major college and club experience to Dallas.
DALLAS - SMU women’s soccer just added a serious development piece for its ACC era.
Head coach Nicole Nelson announced Friday that Chassion Griggs has joined the Mustangs as an assistant coach and goalkeeper coach, giving SMU an experienced voice with a long track record of building winning defenses and elite keepers.
Griggs arrives in Dallas after a lengthy run at San Diego State, where he spent 11 seasons as a full-time assistant and five as associate head coach.
During his time with the Aztecs, San Diego State won four Mountain West regular-season titles, captured two conference tournament championships and made two NCAA Tournament appearances.
For an SMU program trying to make noise in the ACC, that experience is important.
Nelson called the addition a strong fit for the program’s direction, pointing to Griggs’ background at both the college and club levels and his ability to immediately impact goalkeeper development.
She also praised his values and passion for helping SMU push toward a bigger future.
Griggs’ goalkeeper work has been especially impressive. At San Diego State, he helped develop Alexa Madueno into one of the best keepers in program history.
Madueno posted back-to-back 100-save seasons, including 103 saves in 2024, and finished with school records of 411 career saves and 28 shutouts.
That’s the kind of production SMU would love to replicate.
Griggs also helped SDSU post seven shutouts in 2025 and guided the Aztecs to a 14-3-3 record in 2023, including a dominant 9-1-1 mark in Mountain West play.
His past stops also include Point Loma Nazarene, Cuyamaca College and ECNL Rebels SC.
Griggs said SMU’s people, vision, culture and standards made the opportunity impossible to pass up.
