The Mustangs' offense was rolling, but little things kept hurting the unit throughout the game.
The SMU Mustangs managed to get back on the winner's list with a 34-24 win over Missouri State.
Yes, it took Rhett Lashlee's team a while to get going after being held scoreless in the first quarter, but after that, they clicked into gear.
In total, the Mustangs produced 592 yards of total offense, averaged 7.5 yards per play, had 28 first downs, were 8/12 on third down, only punted once, and had the ball for nearly nine more minutes than Missouri.
That is a domination.
But it was only a 10-point win as self-inflicted wounds hampered the Mustangs with interceptions and a fumble, not to mention the 12 penalties as well.
But what did quarterback Kevin Jennings think of the Mustangs' offense' against Missouri?
"I think [there's]stuff we need to clean up, but overall, we played pretty well," Jennings said. "Just the little mistakes on offense, had over 600 yards and moving the ball efficiently, just not capitalizing, turning the ball over in the red zone, just not getting burn on fourth downs as well.
"So, it's putting the whole game plan together, executing it. It would be good."
Putting the whole plan together is what needs to happen.
The Mustangs this season have yet to really put together a proper four-quarter performance that doesn't have silly mistakes and turnovers.
With Boston College up next for Lashlee's team, it is a great opportunity to iron out all of the deficiencies in their game, as Boston hasn't scored over 28 points in a game this season, so they won't be able to keep up in a shootout.
The Mustangs' offense can put up points in a hurry, and if the unit can play mistake-free football, or close enough to it, then we might see a better stat line than the one that was produced against Missouri State.
No more "little mistakes."
