Smith had himself a serious debut for the Mustangs as they rolled to a Week 1 win.
The SMU Mustangs got their season off to a winning start, taking care of Florida State 27-24 at Doak Campbell Stadium...and Yannick Smith played a huge role in it.
Transferring from East Carolina in the offseason, Smith's debut was about as good as you could have hoped for.
Yes, there will be plenty to clean up, but No. 3 had himself a day against Florida State, posting 107 yards and a touchdown from five receptions, which included a 79-yard catch and run.
Easily the best receiver on the field for the Mustangs, to be able to put that showing on film in your first game, especially with everything else that went along with it, including the power outage, Smith has to be happy with his performance, right?
Well, he is, but he also knows there's a lot of room for growth.
"I think it was very good," Smith said of his debut. "Everybody did their job very good. We shot ourselves in the foot a lot. We only punt the ball once, so that says a lot about us, especially week one.
"I think that everybody did their job very good. We still got a lot to clean up, but that's what we got practice for."
Part of an offense that did as it pleased for the most part, putting up 585 yards of total offense, the Mustangs shot themselves in the foot...a lot.
A receiver running the wrong route on one Kevin Jennings interception, two fumbles lost, another interception from Jennings, it was a mixed bag to start the year.
But when you are getting yards for fun, and also dealing with setbacks, that can be tough; however, Smith detailed how the Mustangs managed to keep their head above water.
"We got a lot of stuff that we still need to work on, but it's kind of like just keeping each other up," Smith said. "We in the game right now, so you can't really be down, so you just got to keep make sure everybody up on the team just so we can keep our head forward and our foot forward so we can win the game."
The Mustangs got in their own way, but still managed to escape with what is a superb road win to begin the year, but they are far from the finished product.
As for Smith, that was one way to introduce yourself to the Mustangs, and we wonder what he's got in his locker for the rest of the season.
