The Cardinal are hoping rookie head coach Tavita Pritchard can turn the page after five straight losing seasons, but a brutal ACC-heavy schedule won't make it easy.

Stanford football is getting ready to roll. With training camp set to begin shortly, preparations for the 2026 campaign will get underway and the new era of Cardinal football will officially kick off.

Finishing 3-9 for four straight years between 2021 and 2024 before going 4-8 last year, the Cardinal are eager to start putting together some winning seasons. This season, the program has high expectations for itself, hoping that rookie head coach Tavita Pritchard can bring Stanford football back to contention.

But a new-look program like Stanford is bound to go through some growing pains and a tough schedule makes matters even tougher.

The Cardinal are going to be extra motivated heading into that Hawaii game at home in Week 1, wanting revenge for last year's heartbreaking 23-20 loss and looking to show off some of the fruits of their offseason labor. That is a very winnable game for the Cardinal, but after that, things get very tough.

Starting with a Week 2 matchup at home against the reigning national runner-up, Miami, the Cardinal then face Duke on the road coming out of a bye week, followed by a home matchup against a very good Georgia Tech team.

Duke, coming off an ACC title, should be even better this year, while Georgia Tech, finishing 9-4 last season, is an ACC title contender this season.

Other games on Stanford's schedule this season include matchups with Wake Forest, Notre Dame, NC State, Louisville, Virginia Tech, Cal and SMU. Notre Dame figures to be a College Football Playoff contender once again, while NC State, Louisville, Virginia Tech, Cal and SMU are all programs that could be in the conference title game.

Winning any of those games would be a huge step forward for Stanford, but with a lot of questions still left to be answered, it will take a lot for the Cardinal to muster wins against more established programs.

Teams like Cal, Miami, NC State, SMU and Notre Dame boast quarterbacks that are among the best in college football, while Stanford is still trying to figure out its identity at that position, bringing in Davis Warren via the transfer portal as the presumed starter heading into 2026.

But that does not mean that the Cardinal can't be competitive in those games. Head coach Tavita Pritchard talked about the program's playing style this season at media day, emphasizing his roster's physicality and toughness.

"The way that we're gonna approach our work is with the mindset that we're going to come into the building every single day with an energy, and a focus, that is intent on building a championship process," Pritchard said at media day.

If the Cardinal can put that mindset and that practice on full display, they will give opposing programs a run for their money. Playing close games will lead to upsets, and help establish the new era on The Farm.

The goal for the program this season is its first appearance in a bowl game since 2018. That part is clear.

Once a perennial top-25 program and consistently in the top bowl games, the Cardinal have been a shell of their former selves since the implementation of NIL, and have been working to find their new rhythm in the changing landscape of college athletics.

The Cardinal are working tirelessly to get back to that. Stanford football may improve overall, but the expectation is that the Cardinal will struggle once again in 2026 as they figure out who they are as a team.

But for the first time in a long time, the future appears brighter.
