Behind a new coaching staff, a wave of NFL experience and a loaded 2027 recruiting class, the Cardinal have quietly built a foundation for turning the corner this season and beyond.

In just a few short weeks, Stanford football will take the field for training camp, officially beginning preparations for the 2026 season. Coming off a 4-8 season and their fifth straight losing campaign, Stanford faces increasing urgency to win on The Farm.

But after bringing in a new coaching staff and revamping the roster, the Cardinal enter the season with lowered expectations, once again projected to finish among the bottom half of the ACC.

Tavita Pritchard is taking over as head coach, returning to The Farm after several seasons as an NFL assistant, and he's eager to show his program can win now.

Though many view this as another rebuilding season under a new coach and staff, the pieces are in place for the long haul this time, giving fans something to believe in. Here are five reasons to buy in on the Cardinal in 2026 and beyond.

The New Era

The last few seasons have been a struggle for Stanford football, as the Cardinal have become a shell of their former selves, failing to adapt to the NIL and transfer portal era while struggling to compete against the top teams in college football.

But with head coach Tavita Pritchard taking over with the clipboard and Andrew Luck serving as GM, it is clear that Stanford football is doing everything it can to become a top destination once again. It also doesn't hurt that they have hired a staff filled with NFL experience.

Pritchard, who served as the quarterbacks coach for the Washington Commanders before returning to The Farm, knows what needs to be done to bring Stanford football back. Now getting the chance to lead a program, Pritchard is expected to run Stanford like an NFL team, both setting up the program for success on the field and the players for potential futures in the league.

Recent Recruiting Success

While the 2026 campaign is the main focus for the Cardinal, that has not stopped them from building a foundation for a successful future, already receiving nearly 20 commitments from players part of their 2027 recruiting class.

But what is most interesting is how they have managed to land the services of multiple players who were considering other schools.

For example, Marquis Fennell, a three-star ATH, was originally expected to commit to Florida State, but a late push from Stanford flipped his decision, giving the Cardinal a dynamic and versatile star who can take on a big role right away.

Stanford's ability to land these players shows just how much these recruits are buying into the culture that Pritchard and company are building — a very good sign of what to expect in the future.

Experience at Key Positions

In recent years, one of the many issues that plagued Stanford was inexperience and inconsistent play at certain positions, preventing the team from reaching its full potential. From the lackluster quarterback play to the injuries on the offensive line and everything in between, the Cardinal have struggled to even scratch the surface of a functional offense.

But in 2026, things could look much different. Headlined by the addition of former Michigan starting quarterback Davis Warren and the return of several veterans such as offensive lineman Niki Prongos, running back Micah Ford and defensive backs Jay Green and Brandon Nicholson, the Cardinal will take the field in 2026 with a roster full of seasoned veterans who are used to big moments.

Set to face a tough schedule this season, including an early season matchup against the reigning national runner-up Miami, experience will be key. Having veterans to rely on is the first step towards a potential resurgence for the program.

Limited Pressure From the Outside

Sometimes entering a season without expectations can be a good thing. With all the change occurring this offseason and no winning record in a full season since 2018, the Cardinal are not seen as a threat from the outside.

That may help the Cardinal go about their business without much pressure, allowing them to play looser and with more swagger when they take the field for the first time against Hawaii on Aug. 29. With such a daunting schedule this season, the Cardinal will be playing with house money throughout the campaign.

For some teams, the added pressure causes them to fold and fall short of their goals, such as what happened with Notre Dame last season when they missed the College Football Playoff entirely after finishing as the runner-up in 2024.

But for a program like Stanford, flying under the radar could lead to them being a surprise team that turns heads as the season progresses.

Player Development

Stanford is making up for lost time this season. Once a top program in college football that was consistently in the top 25 and bowl game discussions, Stanford's goal this season is to return to bowl contention.

The best way to do that is to set the players up for success. In addition to Pritchard, the Cardinal brought in longtime NFL coaches such as Kris Richard and Nate Kaczor, giving them a staff that really knows what it takes to make it in the sport of football.

The Cardinal's staff is implementing a more pro-style system, giving the players a chance to test themselves in an NFL-esque environment while in college.

And even though the goal for any recruit is to eventually go pro, the new system and scheme implemented will allow the players to really develop and evolve into potential NFL-ready prospects. Stanford developing players into stars on The Farm will lead to more wins and will serve as another branch of its recruiting pitch moving forward.
