The Cardinal beat out Florida State and 30-plus programs for the Valdosta, Georgia native, who brings rare versatility to a program building toward a return to the national spotlight
Stanford football is continuing to push the gas when it comes to recruiting. The Cardinal are staying locked in when it comes to sustainable success, and have put together a very strong 2027 recruiting class featuring multiple four-and-five-star players.
Late last week, the Cardinal may have landed their biggest commitment yet in three-star ATH Marquis Fennell.
Fennell, a highly touted prospect, was widely expected to land at Florida State after nearly committing to the Seminoles before an official visit to Stanford changed his decision. While Fennell is predominantly a running back, the Cardinal land a guy who can line up anywhere on the field and provide a boost wherever he's needed.
Receiving offers from over 30 schools including Florida State, Stanford, Colorado, Georgia and Arkansas, Fennell's choosing The Farm came down to the wire, with the Cardinal showing persistence when it came to landing the Valdosta, Georgia native.
Led by running backs coach Malcolm Agnew, several coaches were involved in Fennell's recruitment and gave him immediate reasons to buy into the culture.
"It’s bigger than a football decision. That is why I chose Stanford," Fennell told Rivals about why he chose Stanford. "They showed that they really want me. They have recruited me really hard and I just love the atmosphere out there. Stanford is a different place. It is great."
Coming to The Farm in an era where there are a lot of questions to answer, Fennell could be an impact player from the jump. The Cardinal also have a knack for wanting to develop their players to reach their full potential, which could leave year one as more of a backseat role.
Fennell possesses a lot of talent and brings versatility, which should make it hard to keep him off the field in some capacity.
In high school, Fennell has proven to be a key piece for his school and firmly cemented himself as a star during his junior campaign, where he ran the ball 181 times for 1,480 yards and 23 touchdowns, also adding 764 receiving yards and 10 receiving touchdowns.
Helping to guide his school to a 12-2 finish last season, Fennell will look to end his prep career on a high note before starting the next chapter of his career.
As Stanford enters 2026 eager to turn things around, it is clear that this new regime, led by head coach Tavita Pritchard, is ready for the program to return to the national spotlight.
