One of the newest Cardinal is representing Spain at the FIBA U20 EuroBasket this summer as she continues building on an impressive international résumé

One of the newest Stanford Cardinal players will give the program a sneak peek of what it can expect on The Farm while she's competing on the international stage this summer.

Late last week, it was announced that Stanford women's basketball transfer Inés Sotelo Míguez will play for Team Spain in the FIBA U20 EuroBasket. This will mark her fifth time representing her home country in an international competition.

Beginning July 4 in Lithuania and featuring the top 16 teams in Europe, Sotelo Míguez will look to be a key contributor to the team this time around. She averaged 10 points and 6.6 rebounds in seven games at the FIBA U20 EuroBasket tournament last year in Portugal while helping Spain take home the gold medal.

Sotelo Míguez also played a key role in helping Spain finish on the podium at the FIBA U19 Women’s World Cup in Czechia in July of 2025, averaging 8.2 points, 6.2 rebounds and 1.5 assists.

She also competed in the FIBA U18 Women’s EuroBasket in Portugal in August 2024, averaging 10.1 points, 5.4 rebounds and 1.9 assists, and the FIBA U18 Women’s European Championship in Turkey in July 2023, where she averaged 9.0 points, 5.0 rebounds and 2.9 assists.

One of three transfers for Stanford, and one of the seven overall newcomers, Sotelo Míguez will be a crucial player for the program right out of the gate. The Cardinal were once a top program in college basketball, making it to nearly 40 straight NCAA tournaments, but have since struggled to be nationally relevant in recent seasons, missing the last two NCAA tournaments entirely.

But Sotelo Míguez, who started 20 games at Michigan State this past season and averaged nearly seven points, is the exact type of player that Kate Paye and company needed and one who they hope can be a real difference-maker this season.

In addition to Sotelo Míguez, the other transfers for the Cardinal include Ilse de Vries and Charlotte Tuhy, while the incoming freshmen are Gracyn Gilliard, Jordyn Wheeler, Elyse Ngenda and Kiara Green. With a tough slate of games set for this year, the Cardinal need each one of those players to step up right away.

In her most recent game on Sunday, she put up a double-double, scoring 12 points with 12 rebounds, three assists, two steals and a block in over 30 minutes of play. It was also her second straight game with 12 rebounds, which could be a nice added skill set for the Cardinal.

In this year's FIBA U20 tournament, Spain is in Group A alongside Israel, Lithuania and Croatia.

They won the first game over Israel 68-66 before beating Lithuania convincingly, 77-69. Having essentially secured a berth in the next round after winning their first two games, Spain and Sotelo Míguez will look to keep things going in their final group stage game against Croatia on Tuesday before embarking on their knockout round journey.
