With wholesale changes and a new head coach leading the rebuild, the Cardinal face 2026 as a starting point—not a destination. A bowl appearance is possible, but patience will be required

At long last, Stanford football is back in business. After a long offseason, the Cardinal opened fall camp this week and officially began preparing for a tough 2026 campaign.

Set to face a grueling schedule, with a Week 1 matchup against Miami on the docket (after a Week 0 contest against Hawaii), the Cardinal are eager to defy the odds and prove that they have what it takes to hold their own in a loaded ACC.

That is why this year's training camp is the most important in recent program history. Ushering in a new era, headlined by the hiring of first-year head coach Tavita Pritchard and a whole new coaching staff, the Cardinal experienced more transformation than at any point in recent memory, cleaning house and hoping that Stanford alum Pritchard is the ticket to the team's success.

Entering camp, the Cardinal face minimal expectations, picked to finish last yet again in the ACC.

Pritchard has preached that the program will play with a physicality and toughness that will force teams to work harder against the Cardinal, something that could prove beneficial in tight games.

During camp, Pritchard has emphasized setting the tone and laying the foundation. He's been adding layers to the playbook month by month.

General manager Andrew Luck is entering his second season in charge of the program. While Pritchard and his staff are new, the urgency to win is high. Bringing in Pritchard, who boasts vast NFL experience and previously spent 12 seasons as an assistant at Stanford, shows just how ready Luck is to see winning football return to The Farm.

The program hasn't posted a winning record in a full season since 2018. The only exception, 2020's 4-2 mark, came during the COVID-shortened year.

Pritchard knows what it takes to win at Stanford. After playing a key role in Jayden Daniels' NFL Rookie of the Year campaign while serving as the quarterbacks coach for the Washington Commanders, he comes to The Farm eager to work his same magic in player development.

There are a lot of new faces joining the team this season at several important positions, such as quarterback Davis Warren, who transferred from Michigan. But there are also multiple returning starters who need to take a leap forward in this system.

The Cardinal will be tested throughout the season and will need time to gel early on. If Pritchard replicates past success, the Cardinal could surprise with a bowl appearance in 2026.
