With training camp approaching, a look at the depth chart battle behind presumed starter Davis Warren — including highly-touted recruit Mike Mitchell Jr. and a pair of experienced backups.
With training camp set to open next week, the Stanford Cardinal will take the field and officially begin preparing for a tough 2026 campaign. Stanford finished 4-8 last season and has not made a bowl game since 2018, so there is plenty of urgency to win heading into the 2026 season.
This year's success is very much contingent on quarterback play, a position that has held the Cardinal back in recent seasons.
Dealing with inconsistent play and health issues in recent years, the Cardinal revamped their quarterback room this offseason, snagging Davis Warren from the transfer portal and bringing in freshman Mike Mitchell Jr.
Warren figures to be the starter heading into this season given his experience, but let's take a look at the other quarterbacks on the roster as we head towards camp.
Stanford Quarterbacks to Keep an Eye On
Warren brings stability and experience in high-leverage moments, starring at Michigan as the starting quarterback in 2024 before coming to The Farm. For a rebuilding program like Stanford, experience and leadership at football's most important position will play a significant role in the team's fortunes.
But there are other guys that are capable of making noise this season, with Mitchell Jr. being a guy to watch for.
A star at nearby Archbishop Riordan in San Francisco, Mitchell Jr. was a highly touted recruit and received over 10 offers from schools such as Cal, Arkansas, Arizona State, and Vanderbilt, originally committing to the Commodores.
But a visit to The Farm and the hard pitch from head coach Tavita Pritchard and company swayed him to come to Stanford. Possessing a massive skillset, including a big arm and great athleticism for a quarterback who is only 5-foot-10, Mitchell Jr. could quickly prove to be a star in college.
The other newcomer for the Cardinal is true freshman Devin Mignery. A standout at Cardinal Mooney in Florida, Mignery missed most of his senior season of high school with a knee injury. But a 1,600-yard, 22-touchdown junior season suggests that when healthy, he has the type of talent that can lead a program.
While not expected to have much of a role this season, Mignery could prove himself to be a factor down the line.
The Cardinal also have a couple of returning quarterbacks who could be relied upon in case the program needs a safety net.
Headlined by Dylan Rizk, who spent two seasons at UCF, the Cardinal are also bringing back Charlie Mirer. Rizk did not play a single game last season but after spending a season around the team, he is someone who could look to prove himself in camp.
Mirer, a redshirt senior and one of the older guys on the roster, has been with the program since 2022. He made his college debut on Stanford's final drive of the 2025 season against No. 9 Notre Dame, going 2-for-3 with a touchdown in what looked to be his final appearance on a football field. Now he's back, and holds a career 99.7 QBR.
The Cardinal have several options at quarterback this season and while Warren is the obvious choice to start, it helps to know that the program has other talented passers behind him that can be called upon just in case.
