The Syracuse University men's basketball team will look to keep its season going on Tuesday afternoon when it takes on Southern Methodist University (SMU) in the opening round of the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) Tournament (4:30 p.m. ET).
The Orange finished the regular season at 15-16 and 6-12 inside league play, earning the No. 14 seed in this 15-team field. SMU is the No. 11 seed and is very much on the NCAA Tournament bubble, according to prognosticators.
So, the Mustangs enter the game with much to play for. Syracuse does as well: It wants to keep its season going and delay the ultimate discussion on head coach Adrian Autry, who's future is up in the air after a second consecutive losing regular season.
Here's the information you need to know:
For the second consecutive season, the top 15 teams qualify for the ACC tournament. The bottom three teams in the ACC standings are not competing in Charlotte, N.C. In this case, that is Notre Dame, Boston College and Georgia Tech. Both Georgia Tech and BC fired their coaches last week.
The opening round on Tuesday features teams ranked 10-15. The following round on Wednesday features teams finishing 5-9, along with the winners from the previous round. The quarterfinals on Thursday will include the top four seeds facing off in their respective matchups against winners from the previous round. The ACC finals are scheduled for March 14.
In addition to Syracuse and SMU, No. 15 Pitt will play No. 10 Stanford at 2 p.m. ET. No. 12 Virginia Tech will play No. 13 Wake Forest at 7 p.m. ET.
The game will air locally on TK99/105 and can also be listened to on the Syracuse Sports App. Television wise, the game will air on ACC Network.
Wes Durham, Debbie Antonelli and 1990 ACC Player of the Year Dennis Scott will call the game, as noted by ESPN Press Room.
1) Will Kiyan Anthony and Sadiq White Jr. play? Both players missed the final regular season game of the year against Pitt with injury. SU lost in overtime.
2) The Orange defeated SMU 79-78 in the regular season. Can they carry that momentum over into this one? Nate Kingz won the previous matchup in the final seconds.
3) Can Syracuse get enough scoring contributions? JJ Starling was just held scoreless in the loss vs. Pitt and SU will need him to step up again if they are going to survive another day. It could be the final game of his career.
