The Syracuse University men's basketball team snapped a four-game losing streak on Saturday night by beating Notre Dame at the JMA Wireless Dome, but the oddsmakers don't like their chances of earning a second victory on Monday night when they take on North Carolina in Chapel Hill.
As noted by Jon Rothstein of CBS Sports, the Orange are an 11.5-point underdog against the Tar Heels (per Fanduel). North Carolina enters the day at No. 16 in the nation, but the rankings will change a few hours after this post comes out.
UNC last played on Saturday as well, beating Georgia Tech 91-75.
Syracuse beat ND 86-72, playing their most complete game inside ACC play to this point. They were more active defensively, more judicious with the ball offensively, and got a 21-point performance from JJ Starling.
Naithan George had 10 assists and zero turnovers in a big performance as well. Head coach Adrian Autry changed up his starting lineup, sending leading scorer Donnie Freeman to the bench and inserting Sadiq White Jr.
It remains to be seen if he'll employ the same tactic against the Tar Heels. Both teams are coming off quick turnarounds, so it also remains to be seen if that causes both coaches to use their bench a little more.
The Heels enter play at 17-4 overall and 5-3 within the ACC. The only losses for Hubert Davis's team are against Michigan State, SMU, Stanford and Cal.
Stanford is 3-6 in the conference and Cal is 4-5, while SMU is 4-4. Therefore, it's clear that UNC can be beaten, even by average teams. North Carolina has won three straight games however, blowing out Notre Dame and Georgia Tech, while also mixing in a win over No. 14 Virginia.
UNC has four players who average in double-figures for the season, including Caleb Wilson, who gets 20 points and 9.9 rebounds per contest.
The Tar Heels are just a 34.1 percent three-point shooting team, so the Orange will try to lull them into deep jumpers and keep them out of the paint.
--The SU women's basketball team is now 18-4 on the season and 8-3 inside ACC play. They'll be back in action on Thursday night at Boston College. The Orange most recently beat Miami on Sunday afternoon 65-60.
--The No. 2/3 SU men's lacrosse team opened its season on Sunday afternoon against No. 16/17 Boston University at the JMA Wireless Dome. Syracuse, who advanced to the Final Four in 2025, won by a score of 13-6.
