The Orange needed a win against Notre Dame, and they got it on Saturday night.

Notre Dame head coach Micah Shrewsberry after his team lost to Syracuse on Saturday night.

The Syracuse University men's basketball team snapped a four-game losing streak on Saturday night, toppling Notre Dame 86-72 at the JMA Wireless Done. With the win, SU moves to 13-9 and 4-5 inside Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) play. The Fighting Irish are now 11-11 and 2-7.

Here's what you need to know:

Change in rotation

SU head coach Adrian Autry changed up his starting lineup, electing to bring leading scorer Donnie Freeman off the bench in both the first and the second halves. Freeman only played 22 minutes on the night, scoring just seven points and pulling down six rebounds.

Sadiq White Jr. was the beneficiary of more playing time, starting and scoring five points in 19 minutes. Tyler Betsey also played 20 minutes off the bench, scoring eight points on 3-of-6 shooting. Kiyan Anthony played just nine minutes, scoring two points.

Inside the numbers

--Nate Kingz led the way for the Orange, scoring 28 points on 11-of-17 shooting. More impressively, he was 5-of-10 from three-point range.

--Syracuse native JJ Starling had 21 points in 35 minutes, going 9-of-13 from the floor and 3-of-6 from three.

--The Orange shot 57 percent from the floor (32-of-56) and 40 percent from three (10-of-25).

--We asked for the defense to improve in our preview of the game, and it certainly did. Notre Dame still shot 49 percent from the floor, but they were just 6-of-22 (27 percent) from three. Syracuse forced 10 turnovers, had seven steals and registered four blocks.

--William Kyle III was also in double-figures, scoring 10 points and pulling down eight rebounds.

What else worked well

Naithan George had a quiet game scoring wise, notching just four points, but he had a game-high 10 assists. Most importantly, he had no turnovers. He added four rebounds. As a team, Syracuse had 21 assists vs. just six turnovers, a notable improvement.

Needs improvement

Because Syracuse won, the free-throw shooting won't be focused on, but it should be. SU was just 12-of-21 at the charity stripe (57 percent), continuing their reputation as the worst foul shooting team in the conference.

Up next

The Orange will be back in action on Monday night (Feb. 2) on the road at No. 16 North Carolina. Tip-off is 7:00 p.m. ET. The game will air on ESPN.

Also on campus

--The Orange honored the life of all-time leading scorer Lawrence Moten at halftime. He passed away before the start of this season, and you can see what former head coach Jim Boeheim had to say during the ceremony here.

--The No. 2/3 Syracuse men's lacrosse team will open its season on Sunday afternoon (1 p.m. ET) at home against No. 16/17 Boston University.
