The Orange and Yale battled in a classic in the JMA Wireless Dome.

The Syracuse men's lacrosse team advanced to the quarterfinal round of the NCAA tournament with a 16-15 win over Yale on Sunday evening.

The Orange have won an NCAA tournament game in three consecutive seasons under head coach Gary Gait.

Here's everything you need to know about the win and about what happens next for Syracuse.

Game summary

Playing on the home turf of the JMA Wireless Dome, Syracuse led 3-2 at the end of the first quarter. Yale, however, outscored the Orange 6-3 in the second to take an 8-6 lead into halftime.

It did not take long in the third quarter for the Orange to regain the lead as Syracuse scored three goals in five minutes to open the second half. Junior Finn Thomson scored two of those goals to give Syracuse a 9-8 lead, but after a scoring push in the last half of the period, the Orange were on top 13-11 heading into the final quarter.

In all, Syracuse outscored Yale 7-3 in the third quarter.

Less than one minute into the fourth quarter, Cole Cashion scored to get the Bulldogs within a goal, but Syracuse responded with three in a row to go up 16-12. Joey Spallina, the Orange's all-time leading scorer, put in the final goal of the game for Syracuse at the six-minute mark.

The Bulldogs fought back, though, answering with three goals of their own. Sean Grogan netted two of the final three goals, including one with 1:17 to play in regulation. The Bulldogs had an opportunity with under a minute to play but could not score against Syracuse's defense.

Syracuse's goal scoring was led by Thomson and Michael Leo who netted three goals a piece. Cashion had three for Yale.

What's next?

In the quarterfinals, the Orange (12-5) will take on No. 3 North Carolina (13-4) for a third time this season.  Syracuse dropped a regular-season game to the Tar Heels, 14-9 on April 4, followed by a loss in the conference tournament on May 1, 12-10.

North Carolina defeated UAlbany 24-6 in the opening round. Tar Heels standout Dominic Pietramala had a historic day as his 10 goals set a single-game NCAA tournament record. Pietramala also set school records for most single-game and single-season goals, and he became the leading goal scorer in North Carolina history with his performance Saturday afternoon in Chapel Hill, N.C.

Syracuse and North Carolina will play Saturday in Hempstead, N.Y. Faceoff time is still to be determined.

Other weekend stories from Syracuse sports

The Syracuse women's lacrosse team lost in its NCAA Tournament game Sunday afternoon. The Orange held a 9-3 lead at halftime over Navy, but it was not enough to advance to the quarterfinals. Navy rallied back from the deficit and scored the game tying goal with under two minutes to play in overtime.

After winning the faceoff in the sudden-death period, Alyssa Chung netted the game-winning goal to complete the come-from-behind 11-10 victory for Navy. Syracuse will now begin preparations for the 2027 season. Coach Regy Thorpe now will look to find players to replace senior key contributors Coco Vandiver, Emma Muchnick and goalie Daniella Guyette.

Quarterfinal action between Navy and Maryland is set for Thursday, with ESPNU scheduled to air the game. Faceoff time is still to be determined.
