The Orange lost a massive first-half lead to end their season.

The season for the Syracuse women's lacrosse team came to a stunning end on Sunday with an 11-10 overtime loss to Navy in the second round of the NCAA Tournament on Sunday in Annapolis, Md.

Playing on their home field as the top seed in the four-team pod, Navy was behind 9-3 at the half, with Syracuse firmly in control.  But the Midshipmen outscored the Orange 7-1 in the second half to end regulation in a 10-10 tie.

The Orange (14-6) entered the game hoping to advance to their fifth quarterfinal appearance in seven seasons.

Here's everything you need to know about the loss on Sunday and about what happens next for Syracuse.

Game summary

Syracuse led 3-2 at the end of the first quarter but unleashed a six-goal period in the second quarter for that 9-3 halftime lead.

The second-quarter scoring barrage was led by sophomore Caroline Trinkaus, who netted four of the team's six goals in the period. Mackenize Rich and Emma Muchnick added the other two second-quarter goals.

In the third quarter, Navy began to chip away at the lead, shaving two points off the lead to enter the fourth quarter trailing 10-6. The Mids closed the deficit to one when Alyssa Chung found the back of the net at the 5:22 mark of the game.

With just 69 seconds left on the clock, Anna Gotterup scored to send the game to sudden-death overtime.

Navy won the faceoff, and Alyssa Chung scored the game-winning goal less than two minutes into overtime.

Navy's victory moves their record to an impressive 20-1 on the season. The Mids suffered their lone defeat 19-14 against Loyola (Md.) on March 28. The Orange (14-6) defeated that same Loyola team on Thursday 8-6

What happens next

Syracuse will prepare for the 2027 season after a heart-breaking loss to close out the season.

The Orange will lose key contributors to the team in seniors Coco Vandiver, Muchnick and goalie Daniella Guyette.

No. 6-seeded Navy will take on No. 3 seed Maryland (17-3) in the quarterfinal round at SECU Stadium in College Park, Md.

Maryland advanced after defeating Rutgers on Sunday afternoon 11-8.

Terrapins coach Cathy Reese now holds a 30-3 home record in NCAA Tournament games.

The Terrapins have appeared in 36 consecutive NCAA tournaments, but have not advanced tp the Final Four since 2022.

Quarterfinal action between Navy and Maryland is set for Thursday, with ESPNU scheduled to air the game. Faceoff time is still to be determined.

This week's biggest stories involving Syracuse sports

The Syracuse men's lacrosse program will try to advance in the NCAA Tournament as they host Yale inside the JMA Wireless Dome later Sunday. Faceoff is set for 5 p.m ET.  The Orange are looking to end their longest national championship drought in program history.

Syracuse head football coach Fran Brown added more members to his staff. The Orange have announced the hiring of Yulander Wells as chief operating officer, specializing in football. Earlier this week, our own Brady Farkas discussed what Wells' future impact can be for the program.

And the Syracuse men's basketball program is putting the finishing touches on its 2026-27 season. The Orange will play Siena in an exhibition game at the MVP Arena in Albany, N.Y., this fall. New Syracuse coach Gerry McNamara coached the Saints to a near-upset of No. 1 seed Duke in the first round of the tournament in March.
