The Orange defeated Loyola in the opening round on Friday night, thanks to a defensive gem.

Syracuse is moving on in the women's NCAA lacrosse tournament after defeating Loyola (Md.) 8-6 in the opening round Friday night in Annapolis, Md.

The Orange (14-5) are advancing to the second round for the seventh consecutive tournament.

Here's everything you need to know about the win on Friday and about what happens next for Syracuse.

Opening-round summary

  • Syracuse led 4-2 at the end of the first half, setting the tone defensively. The Orange allowed only 17 shots on goal from Loyola (12-8) in the game while taking 29 shots on goal at their own end.
  • Sophomore Caroline Trinkaus led the scoring for Syracuse with three of the team's eight total goals on 11 shots. Trinkaus ranked second on the team in scoring during the 2026 regular season with 38 points, trailing Molly Guzik's 51.
  • Senior goalie Daniella Guyetta needed to record just six saves to help the Orange to the win. The recently named ACC goalkeeper of the year and All-America honorable mention selection was lightly tested between the pipes throughout the game. The 17 shots on goal were the fewest she faced since March 31 against Cornell.
  • Six goals were the fewest scored by a Syracuse opponent in the NCAA tournament since 2016 when Stony Brook also put up six.

What happens next

The Orange will take on Navy (19-1) in the next round at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium. As the No. 6 seed, Navy is the host of the first- and second-round games.

The Midshipmen advanced in a thriller on Friday afternoon, defeating UMass 17-16.

Junior Mikayla Williams scored a goal with just 35 seconds remaining that proved to be the game-winner for Navy.

The second-round game between Syracuse and Navy is scheduled for a 1 p.m. faceoff on Sunday.  ESPN+ will air the game.

And finally, Syracuse men's and women's basketball will navigate a new playoff format in March 2027. The NCAA announced Thursday that the postseason tournament will expand from 68 to 76 teams. Despite much negative fan reaction to the decision, the expanded tournament field could have some benefits for the Orange.
