The Syracuse University men's basketball team will have just half of its dynamic freshman duo on Tuesday afternoon when it opens up Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) Tournament play at 4:30 p.m. ET against SMU in Charlotte, N.C.
After not playing in the regular season finale against Pittsburgh on Saturday, athletic forward Sadiq White Jr. has been cleared to play, per reporting from Syracuse.com. White missed that contest with a left shoulder injury.
However, freshman Kiyan Anthony, the son of Basketball Hall of Famer Carmelo Anthony, will not play for the Orange against the Mustangs. He reportedly injured himself in the penultimate game of the regular season against Louisville. He has a "lower-body" injury.
Syracuse is 15-16 on the campaign and looking to get back to .500. They are the No. 14 seed in the tournament while SMU is the No. 11 and needs a win to improve its NCAA Tournament chances. The full bracket is available here.
It's been an up-and-down season for the talented freshman. His playing time has fluctuated, as have his point totals. He's averaging 18.7 minutes per game, though that's been reduced in conference play, to go along with 8.0 ppg.
His playing time has been a source of consternation for fans. Some think he plays too much, some think he plays not enough.
At this best, Anthony is a smart player who is capable of getting into the lane and drawing contact. He finishes well around the rim and is a good decision maker with the ball in his hands.
As he ages, he'll need to improve his strength so he can absorb that contact better and handle defensive responsibilities easier. He's also only a 25 percent three-point shooter and a 63 percent free-throw shooter.
Anthony did have 13 points in 24 minutes against SMU in the regular season, a game SU won 79-78 on a late bucket by Nate Kingz.
An uber-athletic forward, White hails from Charlotte, so he's undoubtedly happy to be able to play again in his home town. He's averaging 6.1 ppg while shooting 54 percent from the floor and 36.8 percent from three in a limited sample size. He has appeared in 30 of the 31 games in this campaign, also securing 3.3 rebounds per night.
His athleticism could be needed on Tuesday against a big Mustangs frontcourt. He had three points in the previous meeting between the two teams.
