The Syracuse University football program made another exciting hire on Friday, officially bringing in Sean Ryan as its quarterbacks coach and passing game coordinator.
It's a homecoming of sorts for Ryan, who is a Hudson Falls, N.Y. native.
Ryan will help fill the shoes of Nunzio Campanile, who left to become the offensive coordinator at the University of Connecticut.
He's one of several coaching moves for the Orange this offseason -- something that is typical of college football programs.
1) At the outset of the offseason, head coach Fran Brown demoted defensive coordinator Elijah Robinson to defensive line coach and co-defensive coordinator. He then left for a defensive line job at Texas A&M.
2) As mentioned, former quarterbacks coach Nunzio Campanile left to take the offensive coordinator job at the University of Connecticut.
3) The Orange hired Vince Kehres as the new defensive coordinator
4) Perry Eliano was hired as the team's defensive backs coach
5) John Scott will now serve as the defensive line coach. He came over from Florida State.
6) Juan Castillo has been hired to serve as the offensive line coach
7) Alex Byar is being named as the programs special teams coordinator.
Ryan has nearly 30 years of coaching experience, including 18 in the NFL. He won a pair of Super Bowls working with Eli Manning with the New York Giants and he's also worked with the Detroit Lions, Houston Texans, and Carolina Panthers.
Brown had this to say about his hiring:
"Sean Ryan is a professional," said head coach Fran Brown. "To be able to go and get him from the NFL, especially with the number of NFL teams that would be interested in getting him with all the movement going on, was great for us. He comes with high recommendations from Tom Coughlin, Mike McDaniel and others. To win multiple Super Bowls with Coach Coughlin, to have him call and speak so highly of him means a lot. If you look at the quarterbacks he's coached – Eli Manning, Deshaun Watson, Matthew Stafford and the list goes on – it shows you who he is."
As it stands right now, the Orange have four veteran quarterbacks who will vie for playing time next season. Incumbent Steve Angeli, who is returning from a torn Achilles, figures to be the starter, but transfers Amari Odom, Danny Lauter and Malachi Nelson will all make a charge.
The Orange were 3-1 in 2025 before Angeli suffered his injury. With him back in the fold - and a stable of solid additions in the transfer portal - things are looking up for Brown's team. Of course, they'll play a challenging ACC schedule and see Notre Dame in 2026, which will make life tougher.
